I'm guessing you're saying he should be executed?

He's in captivity, it's highly unlikely that he'll escape. He'll suffer for his crimes over many long years. This is what he deserves, not death. Death is merciful, it ends his suffering.

Indeed
Life in person or death. Both are the same thing. He will die in prison or he will die in the chair (or in a bed with a needle in him)

and personally life in prison and then death seems the greater punishment to me

for the record (since I didnt see the post above me)

I am pro rehabilitation and pro involuntary commitment

Thats right, the real problem is the high standards of norwegian prisons. It can in many ways be compared to a hotel. personally I would see the man hanged or beheaded in all publicity.

So, since the guy isnt a Muslim and they can't pin that for why he did it, the Media is trucking out video games as a chief cause for his violent actions, saying that he was inspired by the actions of the character Anders (who shares his name and he even looks similiar to!!! =o) in Dragon Age 2 as well as pointing to excerpts in his Manifesto where he claims and urges fellow "rebels" to use MW2 as a training mechanism for using weapons and getting familiar with urban combat.

In the game Dragon Age 2, there is a mage companion named Anders. He is blond and according to some media outlets, Anders Behring Breivik modeled his hair style after him. In the game, Anders campaigns against the mistreatment of Mages at the hands of the Chantry and their Templars. At the end of the game, Anders goes behind the main character(yous) back and plants a bomb in the Chantry, killing the Revered Mother to ensure that a war happened between the mages and the chantry where the Mages could fight for their freedom

Media outlets are claiming that he drew inspiration from Anders' terrorist attack, wanting to inspire a similar reaction in the non-muslims against the rise of islam.

oh yeah because Mw2 totally simulates gun physics and urban combat / warfare at all.

If they want to point fingers at any shooter game they should point fingers at ARMA2 which is one of the most realistic military shooter sims out there.

The "Its not islams so it must be video games", while ****tarded and somewhat disappointing isnt surprising at all for the media imo.

Umm, source? I can somewhat see Modern Warfare as it is a game that tries to be realistic and is set in this world, but Dragon Age 2???? What, are Muslims now Templars oppressing the helpless Western Mages? That doesn't make sense at all.

You're right that it doesn't make sense, but the fact that they'd say it anyway doesn't surprise me. Video games are like the go to explanation for analysis and debate when the media has to fill 24 hours of airtime.

I'm doubtful that Modern Warfare was developed to be realistic to any scale. But video games are basically the best excuse as to why everything's wrong in the world, for the media. It aggravates me when news reporters go out of their way to try to place games with violence in negative light.

There's something to be said about video games helping to de-sensitize people to violence, but there's a gigantic leap between that and actually carrying out acts of violence.

Oh I am sure some of the designers tried to be realistic, but notice, I said (both here and in my earlier post) "tries." Of course it isn't very realistic to true life, but it is closer than some FPS's.

As for Dragon Age, I love that, but see no correlation to the real world. Not only is it removed from any vestiges of a modern setting, but the connection with any bombing or shooting children is not there. Yes, a cathedral was blown up, but there were no children killed in the game (and only [possibly] one in the first).

True, though movies have just as much potential as video games to de-sensitize people (if not more), imo.

I'd compare Modern Warfare to the old arcadey shooters where rockets are flying everywhere and people didn't give a damn about cover (ie. Serious Sam). It's as realistic as that, really.

No one would like a truly realistic shooter. :p

A) I can't find the few blog posts and the news article I was reading, but they basically said that Brevik styled his hair like Anders and was inspired by his exploding the Chantry as a way to get people to pay attention to the issue and be forced to fight back. It was retarded, utterly retarded.

B) I agree with Brandon in that VGs have indeed led to a desensitized attitude towards violence, and I know that Ive been playing violent games since I picked up Sarge's Heroes on my old N64 and chased people around with a flamethrower -that doesn't mean that I have any desire to do it in real life.

C) I was actually approached by a Marines recruiter who started the conversation by jokingly(I hope) asking me if I wanted to play Modern Warfare for real. But in reality, playing a few hundred hours of MW2 would probably prepare you for actual gun use and combat as much as Duck Hunt.

Because hair styles are so uncommon that they can be used to identify mass murderers...interesting. :CDumb

In other news, looks like the death toll has been lowered. Which...is sorta better news? Eh...
