I have to say I'm starting to like Cavil's suit more and more. In a cinematic world where I realize we're likely not going to see the old Superman suit on screen for a long time, I do like it. And it's a fair bit better than the current New 52 Superman costume.
Here's a quick explanation of Superman's new suit in The New 52. Superman was wrapped up in the red cloth as a child, when he landed on Earth the Kents took him in, and as he got older Ma Kent turned the cloth into a cape, how I don't recall but they gave an explanation. For the first couple months to a year of Superman being active in Metropolis, he donned only the cap, along with jeans, work books, and an alternating white/blue shirt with his Kryptonian families crest on it.
Later when Brainiac is attacking Earth in an attempt to catalogue it then destroy it, Superman jumps up into space, lands on Brainiacs ship and finds a suit of indestructible white Kryptonian armour. Superman argues with Brainiac, defies him, and throws the suit on, it turns from white to blue, the symbol of house El pops up on the chest, and Superman has gained his costume.
I don't like the New 52 design. LINES FOR THE SAKE OF LINES and lazy texturing. At least it makes sense in-context for Superman, but every one of the big DC guys and gals looks like that now. Wonder Woman's design is a horrendous mishmash of concepts (and has spikes, FFS.) But your mileage may vary.
I still believe that Man of Steel is gonna suck something awful (and I'm gonna laugh at Bac when it does) but I will say that what stills, etc. I've seen of the costume actually do look good. So design doesn't seem like it's going to be an issue, at least insofar as Clark's costume/armor/whatever is concerned. The Kryptonian armor does look stupid, and the Zod plotline seems groan-inducing. Hopefully it sucks enough to be riffable, and not just a train wreck.
As for who should head the DC Film Universe?
Brad Bird, Joss Whedon, Bruce Timm, Greg Weisman, Etc.
