Zerath was no stranger to security checkpoints, but for some reason they always made him nervous. Besides the fact that, depending on the thoroughness of the search he could be outed as a Jedi, a small, irrational part of his brain always worried that the people searching him would find something far more illegal than a lightsaber in his possession- even though there was really nothing to be worried about.

As it was, the guards seemed to be confident in their sheer force of numbers, waving them in after a brief visual inspection and a scan of their speeder. Zerath was able to hide both their lightsabers from being discovered with a subtle application of the Force, and soon the Jedi were on the other side of the checkpoint (security pass roll 18/20).

Once past, it didn't take long to locate Trevor Hungsly. The gardener was busy repairing damage to lawn where it appeared that a vehicle of some sorts had cut across it at high speed, damaging the nearly impeccable grass. A quick glance around showed signs of a brief firefight, with blaster marks scorching the pavement and the remnants of a crime scene investigation still present. [This must've been where the kidnapping occurred] he said to Hailee. [What do you notice?] he asked her, holding up his datapad to take photos of the area. Hungsly wasn't going anywhere, so they could take a moment to investigate the crime scene before approaching him; an especially important step considering how little information they had.

While the drive was fully unproblematic and quick, Hailee actually held her breath as they passed the security checkpoint. She knew exactly that the success of their mission could be threatened by such small details again and so she was quite on edge while she was just hoping that they'd let then through.

Zerath's cheeky and subtle application of the Force might have gone unnoticed by the guards, but as Hailee sensed what he was doing, a small smirk crossed her lips. She politely thanked the guards and wished them a pleasant day before she directed her focus back to the road.

The drive towards the garden was a quick one and so she soon pulled over, exiting the car with the knight. She immediately started scanning the garden with her attentive gaze before she turned to Zerath to answer his question. 'Signs of a little shooting...a vehicle went through her. We should measure the tire traces' maybe the width would later indicate something of importance. 'Also, do you see the liquid over there?' she kept the communication telepathical, raising an eyebrow as she walked over before realizing that Zerath wasn't seeing the liquid. She grinned a little sheepishly as she squatted down, examining the dark, oily fluid before she could already smell it. 'Fuel. They were apparently in a hurry and they had no electric vehicle' she explained before getting back to her feet. 'Let's hope Mr. Hungsly knows more about the assault or assailants'. Trevor was already glancing over, his brows furrowed and a hand in his hip as he suddenly called something over to them. "Get of me freshly sown lawn you rascals!".

A land vehicle. The realization clicked in Zerath's mind as he and Hailee looked over the scene of the abduction. An interesting choice of transportation, given their limitations when it came to maneuverability, but they were much cheaper to acquire and repair. Their tendency to have roofs and windows also limited facial recognition services of those not in the front seat.

Like Hailee, Zerath had noticed the liquid that had been leaked by the getaway vehicle; its pungent smell causing him to wrinkle his nose. [We might've caught a break] he said, eyes narrowing as he examined the spill. [If it's leaking fuel at that rate, they can't have gone more than a few blocks.] Perhaps there was a fuel trail they could follow; even a small one might be able to be detected with a fine enough sensor.

As it was, Trevor Hungsly interrupted his thoughts somewhat rudely. Zerath bit back his frustration at being faced with another potentially uncooperative witness and plastered a smile on his face as he stepped back to the curb. "My apologies. Governor Keloft has tasked us with searching for Rhi and Relas" he said, remembering Hailee's erlier observation while displaying their certification for the man to see. "Do you have a moment?"

At the mention of the children's names, anger darkened Trevor's face, but Zerath could tell that the anger was no longer directed at them. "Who the kriff goes after liddle tykes like that? Yeah, I've got time. This mess ain't goin' nowhere" he said, indicating the lawn with a wave of a grimy hand. "They came from tha' way" Trevor said, using the same hand to point up the road in the opposite direction of the gate. "Two trucks, full-size vans, really, each with six men in full black combat armor. Saw a flash grenade go off, and then they just started lighting the place up. All stun bolts... at least until they'd taken the kids..." the gardener trailed off, his jaw settling in a hard line as he gazed into the past. Zerath released a breath slowly through his nostrils as he realized that Malter must have been extremely fortunate to have escaped with his life.

"This is all very helpful information, Mr. Hunglsey" Zerath said, his tone gentle. Although gardening was not for the faint of heart, the morning's events were no doubt traumatic for Trevor. "Did you see what happened to Rhi or Relas?" Thus far, Trevor hadn't told them much that they did not already know.

"Yeh..." said the gardener, shaking his head slightly to banish unwelcome memories. "They put one in each van and tore off; one of them hit the curb funny I think, which is why you see all that fuel. Last I saw they'd exited the compound and had turned left." Trevor's nose wrinkled as a thought occurred to him. "Funny, the gate wasn't even closed..." Zerath glanced over at Hailee as he processed this new information, wondering what further answers she might get from Trevor.

The blonde Jedi agreeingly nodded when Zerath expressed how he was assuming they hadn't come far at least. She followed the tracks with her eyes, noting the direction in which it went and the other traces of rather violent measures apparently implemented by the assailants. Whoever they were, they had been in a hurry, that was obvious.

Hailee was suddenly a little startled due to the man -the witness actually- who interrupted their conversation. She turned at once, her gaze flicking over to him at once. While examining the traces, she hadn't even realized how he had gotten closer to them, but now their investigation had to be put on pause for a moment.

Trevor was a middle-aged man, but it seemed like life had aged him more than it should have. He obviously worked in a job that required plenty of physical strength, but it seemed like there was more to that. There was a tiredness written in his features, a tiredness she had only rarely encountered before. "Mister Hungsley, excuse our unannounced visit" she added with a sheepish grin, greeting him politely though.

Zerath did the talking right now and Hailee observed carefully. It didn't seem like he was withholding certain pieces of information and he seemed interested and brining this case forward, which was definitely a good sign. They now had more descriptions and a real trace, so her mood lightened. "We thank you kindly. We can definitely work with those useful details. Is there anything else you have noticed though? The model of the van, special details about the clothes, something they said?". Maybe they coukd still gain some more insights, but she felt hopeful about that they already had.

Zerath nodded his head, silently seconding Hailee's questions about the getaway vehicle and physical descriptions of the attackers. Trevor scratched at his chin with a dirty hand, glancing up at the late morning sky as he pondered Hailee's questions.

"The vans were both black Astros" he said, naming an older but reliable model. "Tha's the one with a sliding door only on the passenger side" he said, referring to the unique layout of the van. Some vans had sliding doors on both sides, but the manufacturer of the Astro had bucked the trend. "As for th' men... humans, most of 'em. One Weequay, seemed t' be in charge. Dressed in black combat armor and armed to th' teeth."

"Thank you, Mr. Hunglsey" Zerath said, swinging his head over towards Hailee. [Anything else you want to ask Trevor?] he asked her, mentally. [This is good information, and we might be able to track down the damaged Astro, especially if it didn't get very far.] The clock was ticking.

The gardener was surprisingly helpful and supplied them with plenty of valuable pieces of information which were truly appreciated. It also seemed like there was not much more left to tell as they actually had more than a lead now. She was grateful and there was no need to bother the man further, and so with a polite incline of her head, she thanked him again. "We thank you kindly, Mr. Hungsley" she was supporting what Zerath had already started.

'It sounds like we're good. Let's start by tracking the car. It must have come to a halt not far away' she telepathically said to her companion before she turned to the gardener once again. "Take care". With that, she turned leave, giving the witness another gentle smile before she was headed towards the tracks once again. From the sounds of it, gardener also immediately getting back to work.

"If you think of anything else, here is my contact information" Zerath said, handing Trevor a card, which disappeared into one of the gardener's many pockets- likely never to see the light of day again. Regardless, the conversation had been fruitful for the Jedi, who now had a much warmer trail to follow than when they'd started.

Hailee still had the keys and Zerath was fine with letting her drive. The speeder did not have the sensors required to track the now-evaporated fuel trail, which meant that a datapad would have to be held down near the pavement in order to scan for traces of fuel Zerath pulled up the scanner on his device, giving thanks for the wide array of sensors that were installed on it to help with investigations just like these; being a Jedi had some perks. Unfortunately, the high doors of the speeder meant that he would have to lie prone on the hood in order to scan effectively (Convenience roll: 4/20).

Feeling a little foolish, Zerath nonetheless did his best to smile off his awkward position. "Don't make any sudden turns!" he said, half joking and half serious. "I'll call out directions as we're going along." Ignoring the weird looks he got from the guards at the gate, Zerath would telepathically give directions to Hailee, allowing the two to slowly follow the trail of the kidnappers...

After this last, brief exchange, the two Jedi went their way, knowing well that they couldn't waste any time. The trail might not have been fully hot, but still fresh and with each and every minute that passed, their chances of finding them faded. They hopped back into the speeder, Hailee being the one driving and Zerath being in the passenger seat until he- what the kriff?

Her eyes flicked over to him while he was busy getting into position. "What are you-" she stopped herself, glancing back onto the road, actually understanding what he was trying to do. It was clever. They'd move fast and still follow the trail.

She still couldn't help but to giggle at how he examined the trail from his admittedly interesting position. "I won't...but please be careful and hold on tight". With that, she focused on the road ahead, her pace steady while keeping a good speed.

Zerath called back, using telepathy to communicate with Hailee. The Knight continued calling back directions as they followed the fuel trail for several miles, leaving the luxury of the gated community behind and entering a rundown industrial district. Zerath's odd position atop the hood of the speeder drew more than a few quizzical looks from passerby, but the further that Hailee drove, the more scarce those passerby became. Old brick buildings, their windows boarded up and their smokestacks crumbling, stood as a stark difference from the opulence of the elites. Gone, too, was the greenery and sculpted lawns; replaced by duracrete and desperation.

[There] Zerath said, suddenly, pointing alongside an abandoned warehouse as Hailee turned the corner. One of the Astro vans was parked awkwardly, almost to the side of the otherwise empty street. As Hailee brought the speeder to a stop, Zerath groaned slightly as he slid off the hood rolled his shoulders to loosen the tense muscles there. [Next time I'm pulling rank making you do that] he said, jokingly.

Despite his humor, Hailee would notice that Zerath had his lightsaber out, but not yet ignited. Waving a lightsaber around tended to attract attention, which could be incredibly dangerous in a potential hostage situation. [Truck's clear, but I can't see into the warehouse] he said a moment later; there were limits to Force Sight.

The Miralukan glanced over to Hailee, and jerked his head towards the warehouse. [Which door do you want, front or back?]

Hailee skillfully ignored curious and confused onlookers while she drove with absolute care. She took turns as softly as possible, cautiously listening to the direction giving by the Jedi-Knight on the speeder hood. They followed and followed until they finally reached said van, parking suspiciously weird. Bingo though.

She really couldn't help but to chuckle at his comment, even though he wasn't wrong. Next time she'd do the slightly uncomfortable dirty work for sure, but she wasn't convinced whether for the next step she'd have to climb on the hood like this. 'No problem' she promised softly, although matching his joking vibe.

As they sneaked to the building, she took out her lightsaber just like him, carefully stepping and listening, but so far, everything seemed calm. 'I would have said front door. Many guard their backdoor because that's where someone would sneak in' she suggested, using reversed psychology or something close to it...criminal psychology maybe.

The more Zerath thought about the idea of going in one of the doors, the less he liked it, even accounting for Hailee's line of thought. [We know these kidnappers are capable, so they'll probably have all ground-level entrances covered] he mused, holding up a hand to show his reluctance to proceed without considering a different plan. The doors on the main floor of the warehouse were the most obvious point of entry, but they were not the only point of entry to the building... especially for a Jedi.

[What about the roof access?] he asked, pointing up towards the roof of the warehouse. [They might not expect anyone to enter there, and we can use that to our advantage.] The high ground was the stuff of legend in the Jedi Order, and it always brought Zerath a strange sense of satisfaction when he was able to secure it during a fight. Besides, the opportunities it provided for reconnaissance more than outweighed the extra time it might take to enter the building.

Gathering the Force inside him, Zerath leaped, clearing the three stories and landing easily on the flat roof. Aside from some random debris; perhaps from the skeletal remains of what had once been an advertising billboard, the roof was clear save for the usual vent ductwork and, to Zerath's relief, the roof access door. The Jedi Knight tried the door gently, finding that it was locked- or perhaps rusted- shut. Zerath glanced back, hoping to see that Hailee had followed him, and gestured towards the door with his lightsaber hilt. [Would you like to do the honors?]

She obviously reconsidered her own idea immediately after a silence of his followed. What other choices do they have? Sure, they could head for the windows as well, but if they wouldn't let themselves be opened so easily, they'd have to create unnecessary noises. Suddenly her glance wandered upwards and it dawned her. 'The roof. Right' she stated a split second after he had begun, chuckling at their shared conclusions. 'You're right. That's probably the best chance we'll get to surprise them'. The question that still remained however, was whether the kids and the other missing citizen were even inside here...well, if they'd at least find someone to question, they'd already get further.

So she nodded once again, watching him jump up with ease before looking around attentively. No one was watching and the streets seemed empty, so she wasn't too concerned right now. She still decided to stay on her guard and then gathered the Force around her to prepare for the jump just like he had. Landing quietly on the roof, she now found herself next to him again and immediately nodded at his suggestion. 'Sure' she telepathically answered before stepping closer, moving the lightsaber's hilt to the lock before quickly activating and deactivating it again. The lightsaber hissed and melted the whole locking mechanism, allowing them to quietly opening the now opened door now. 'Okay let's move in. Seems clear for now'

Zerath had been prepared for surprises on this mission- it had, after all, been one surprise after another- but even so, he wasn't expecting Hailee to casually pull out a lightsaber with a corrupted crystal. Zerath didn't even need to see the color of the blade when the crystal itself, once activated, left behind a small but unsettling ripple in the Force. The Miralukan tensed despite himself, even though the blade vanished just as quickly as it had appeared after gaining the Jedi entry; Hailee hadn't mentioned anything about her weapon earlier.

Internally, Zerath debated how best to continue as his mind raced to process this new information amid sudden doubts about Hailee's trustworthiness. If she was a Sith who wanted to kill him, then she likely would've just run him over with the speeder on their way here. If she was a Sith trying to secretly use him to rescue the children only to stab him in the back, then she'd just outed herself for no reason.

No; the most likely reason, he surmised, was that Hailee had encountered or acquired the lightsaber somehow during her adventures. Padawans didn't usually carry around corrupted kyber crystals, but then again, Hailee wasn't your typical Padawan. He'd definitely have to keep an eye on her- from what she'd shared with him, the crystal might be threatening Hailee's control over her emotions- but it was too late to turn back now, and time was the one thing they did not have on their side.

Instead, he simply nodded in thanks as he stepped forward into the doorway, noting the ladder that led down to a metal catwalk of sorts, high above the floor of the warehouse. [When you want to purify that crystal, I can assist you] he offered. [Do you have any other weapons? We don't want you getting mistaken for a Sith.]

Just as Hailee had cut the door open, she had sensed a shift in the mood of her companion. Damn right, the lightsaber. She had almost forgotten about it as she was actively blocking out those faint, yet tormented screams that resounded from the borrowed weapon.

Her life had been a rollercoaster and since she had still not mananged to contact Pêro, she was still carrying the enemy's weapon. She hadn't gotten the chance to get hands on a normal lightsaber and she had not yet mananged to purify it, which was obviously a huge problem, but she would tend to that as soon as she would finally get to a temple.

For now, she had followed the distress signals she had picked up, wanting to help those who had been in desperate need of it. She turned to Zerath a little hesitantly, already biting her lips as this was probably looking very wrong. 'Damn...I'm so sorry, I should have warned you! My lightsaber got taken away and in a desperate situation I fled with what I could grab. I definitely want it purified and I would gladly take you up on that offer, actually' she let out an actual sigh.

'But yes, true. I can use my blaster, or my vibro knives if needed. I'm quite precise with them and can pin enemies' she explained telepathically, taking out her blaster and ensuring it's on stun mode already before nodding and entering quietly. She glanced down the ladder, carefully observing what was going on down there before she put her foot on the first step. 'I'll go first' she declared confidently, wanting to go first as she was the one seeing more with her eyes. Not that he wasn't great at Force sight, but she wasn't sure how many details he would pick up.

Zerath was usually pretty good at determining if someone was lying, so while Hailee's answer raised even more questions, he decided to trust her now and ask those questions later. Forcing himself to focus on the mission at hand, Zerath nodded, accepting Hailee's words. [You can fill me in on the details later] he responded, noting that if half of what she'd just summarized was true, then Hailee must have had some very interesting adventures. Zerath allowed Hailee a few seconds to scale the ladder down onto the catwalk before following, his lightsaber out but not ignited so long as they went unnoticed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Jedi found themselves on the highest level of a rusty catwalk almost three stories above the abandoned warehouse that was still heaped with old crates and pallets. A couple of lightbulbs sputtered out their final hours from the ceiling, giving the whole place a slightly haunted feeling to it. The central area of the old warehouse was more clear than its perimeter, in which the Jedi would be able to see one of the Ceran younglings tied to a chair, with two guards in immediate proximity. The other four were on patrol amidst the boxes and crates.
The disheveled nature of the abandoned warehouse was both a blessing and a curse; for as much cover as the crates and pallets provided, they also provided a mazelike structure that the kidnappers most certainly would know like the back of their hand by now; as simple as the pathways appeared from atop the catwalks, Zerath knew that everything would change when it was viewed from the ground level.
One thing that the Jedi did have on their side- for now- was the element of surprise. The guards were clearly well-trained, and during their few minutes' planning, Zerath could decipher no regular pattern as they patrolled. However, they were far from the first to make the mistake of not looking up.
Zerath frowned slightly- this time, his thinking face- as he considered how best to mount this rescue operation. [Once we're down there, it'll be easy to get lost... and too easy to accidentally run into a guard.] The Miralukan would welcome suggestions from Hailee, even as he laid out one potential plan. [If you stay up here while I head down, you can give me directions so I can avoid the guards... kind of like a giant game of SPAC-Man] he mused, referencing the popular old arcade game. [Plus, with your blaster, you can provide cover if needed. You'll be pretty exposed up here, though...] he trailed off, glancing around at the catwalk. The plan would require a good amount of trust and coordination between the two of them for it to work, and even then there was no certainty of success. A fight was inevitable, given the guard surrounding the captive youngling.
[What do you think? Got any other ideas?]
Hailee tried to move as fluidly as possible in order not to cause any sounds. She always stepped down as lightly as she could, carefully testing each step for unwanted squeaks and other noises, but their descend seemed to work rather well and soon the Jedi duo found themselves on the cat walk above the scene down there.
Hailee let out a subtle breath of relief as her gaze fell upon the two kids that seemed to be the governor's. Even if they weren't, it was obvious that this was no game and that the kids were hostages held by whoever started this and that they were in desperate need of saving.
She questioned the motives of the captors, yet this could surely be something they could figure out later as for now they had to act. Well, the guards were probably not Force-sensitive and no ethereal senses cautioned them about the two approaching Jedi from above, yet there were quite a few of them and so they definitely had to be careful.
'I like that idea...I guess it makes the most sense to split up, keep an overview and take them out quietly if necessary'. Zerath could switch his lightsaber to stun mode and Hailee would do the same with her blaster. 'But please...be careful. In case they'll get alerted, I'll jump them and help you from the ground. It seems like they're waiting here for something or someone, so we better hurry to get them out immediately' she continued, throwing him a soft, yet rather optimistic smile. 'I can absolutely do that. I'm good at keeping a low profile so I'm sure they won't spot me'. Obviously, she couldn't say for sure, but there were still opportunities for her to hide as well and still keep in contact with Zerath.
[I'll be careful] Zerath promised, growing more confident in the course of action as he listened to Hailee's contingency plans. She was right that they needed to strike a balance between speed and caution, as this was clearly not a permanent base for the kidnappers; more than likely, they were waiting for a ride. [May the Force be with you, Hailee] he said telepathically, before taking advantage of an opening in the guards' patrolling to disappear down the ladder.
From her position on the catwalk, Hailee would soon be able to spot Zerath making his way amongst the crates and barrels down on the floor of the warehouse, on a course to intercept the nearest patrolling guard. A quick ambush was set by the Jedi Knight at a corner, followed by the guard collapsing noiselessly into Zerath's arms. The Miralukan hid the unconscious guard as best he could behind a barrel before moving on. In coordination with Hailee, he swiftly tracked down and did the same to a second guard (ambush success 17/20).
Hailee would notice, however, that Zerath's current location was currently threatened by the two remaining guards on patrol after one of them made a random adjustment to their course. While the guards were oblivious to the intruder in their midst, Zerath's position in the middle of a longer hallway meant that he was about to be pincered by the guards about to round the corner at either end of it...
She had mixed feelings about this, yet splitting up was perhaps the most advantageous decision, strategically speaking. 'May the Force be with you, too', she telepathically replied, her gaze flicking over to the Miralukan one more time before she watched him descend.
She immediately positioned herself inbetween two larger, wooden crates that offered some cover after all. She then focused on her companion down below, preparing to guide him like through a little maze. She had her blaster ready and followed Zerath while aiming at the nearest guard already.
'Okay, left behind this barrel you'll find the first' she instructed him telepathically, admiring how quickly he managed to deal with him. 'Next one is at 9 o'clock from where you are right now. Wait...wait...and now past the crate, then left...he's checking his datapad behind the crate on the left'.
Their teamwork went well, however once the two remaining guards in his quarter suddenly broke their slight pattern and Zerath was about to find himself in a precarious situation. Hailee had to think, quickly. 'Okay careful, they're coming from both sides. Sneak forward, take out the one in front of you while I'll deal with the one behind you. Forward...forward...Okay 3...2...1' she pulled the trigger, hitting the unprepared guard who was just rounding the corner who landed on the ground with a thud. If Zerath dealt with the one in front of him, they were fine.
Following Hailee's instructions, Zerath continued his progress around the floor of the warehouse; trusting her eyes as much as his own senses. Not all games of SPAC-man were winnable, however, and soon the Jedi Knight was being approached from two different directions. Zerath didn't hesitate, heeding Hailee's advice to focus on the one rounding the corner ahead of him, when all hell broke loose.
Zerath stepped towards the guard as he rounded the corner, thrusting his palm up and into the man's chin; dropping the guard like a sack of potatoes (attack 16/20). At the same time, Zerath heard a stun bolt- from Hailee's direction- whine by above his head, where it slammed into the guard behind him. The element of surprise had been lost, but the Jedi's coordination had turned a 6v2 into a 2v2.
Unfortunately for Hailee, those two remaining guards were alerted to her presence on the catwalk, and soon were taking turns firing on her position- with lethal bolts this time. The cover she'd found would be sufficient for a few moments, but under the sustained fire it was clear to Zerath that it was only a matter of time before the barrage started hitting home. To make matters worse, their military training meant that they were actively covering each other as they tried to get a better angle on the Padawan, suppressing Hailee with a flurry of blaster bolts whenever one was on the move; any return fire from Hailee would carry risks.
Taking a breath to steady himself, Zerath charged around the corner towards where he saw the red bolts originating from, only to realize that a large pile of crates and barrels blocked his path; a dead end. Without Hailee's directions to guide him, Zerath began climbing the precariously-stacked crates, hoping that he'd be able to take some pressure off of Hailee in time... (Zerath navigation roll: 4/20)
The relief that swept over her was only temporary, as right after they had successfully taken out four of the six guards through perfectly coordinated teamwork, her position was hiven away to the other two who immediately started shooting. With a gasp, she fell back behind a crate, her blaster pressed to her chest while she held her breath.
...and so the Padawan was a little lost, caught in a crossfire and stuck between the crates that were offering some temporary cover but nothing more. Zerath was still down there and they had no idea where he was, yet he would have to sneak up on them to incapacitate them as well.
'I- ooh!' as she tried peering around a corner, a blaster bolt immediately zoomed past her, missing her by an inch so that she had already felt the hot energy sizzling much nearer to her face than she had intended and realizing that she was stuck, as well as him.
'I can't navigate you, they're not letting me...I can push down the crate though and slip away to try offering some distracting while we coordinate our attack once again. Can you reach them?!'. Even telepathically, her voice was rushed and hectically. Her breathing intensified, right as her heart began speeding while the first parts of the box broke away, thus slowly eating away what was left of her cover. Time was running against them and they'd have to move quickly. Otherwise, her only option would have been to run, obviously risking betting shot while at it.
