Sounds like Brock doesn't know his pokemans.
4Kids fails at translating, actually. Electrabuzz is a fire type, gaiz!

Water's super effective against poxy fire!

Yet water is weak to Thunder and grass. Which Typhlosion can learn Thunder punch, and solar beam. Solar beam would be nice if on a Sunny Day, but thunder punch works just as well. And a properly raised Typhlosion will go first, too.

Yeah, but a good slap and it's done.

That would depend moreso on the speed and the situation the pokemon are in; Typhlosion has a much greater speed stat than Feraligatr.

Feraligatr might have solid attack and defense, but Typhlosion's spec stats outperforms Feraligatr.

Yeah, between the two they're in different tiers- they can't be compared. But compared to pokemon in the same tier Typhlosion goes down too quick, and Feraligatr has the type advantage so his STAB (Which Thunder Punch doesn't get) would put Typhlosion out.

Every time I come across a Typhlosion it's always one hit down. In the game itself it might be more useful due to the range of attacks, but against other players not so much.

Crystal is the third game in the second line.

That's the one.

I never really payed attention to stats when I played Pokemon. I basically just kept doing the same attack over and over again until I won with the Pokemon I thought looked or sounded the coolest.

What kind of Typhlosion did you fight? It's not always STAB > non-STAB, though it does give a natural advantage. A non-STAB attack can perform just as well as STAB, given that the proper breeding and equipment is involved. Plus, the Typhlosion's large variety of elements can give a different sort of strategy than brute force.

I can't really say as to the efficiency of a Typhlosion in a PvP setting, though I do use non-STAB moves to assist in making my opponents helpless against my onslaught of power moves.

You've never fought an EVed one, then. Against other players Typhlosion throws a monkey wrench in there. You wouldn't get a hit on a typhlosion. You'd be hit with a thunder punch first turn. I don't need a STAB to hit with enough attack to OKO Fera. I know Typhlosions are special attack, but one could be EVed with speed and attack.
Also solar beam could be used in conjunction with a power herb.

I know first hand the damage a Typhlosion can do. I've seen Gen IV ones OKO Feras, and they were EVed for speed, and special attack, and if we go from Gen II I know first hand typhlosion wrecked anything people sent at me.

I sure have fought EV'd ones, I got on the competitive tournys. Typhlosion is in the NU rank because of his all around mediocre stats, and even though Feraligatr has 4 stat points less it's still a tier above in UU. This is all besides the fact as you never see a Typhlosion with Thunder Punch in competitive anyway, because it plays off the weaker Attack as opposed to the Special Attack that Overheat would use. If you for some reason raised your Typhlosion up as a physical sweeper then you'd have to be lucky to kill Feraligatr with one unboosted attack, and then the Torrent kicks in and you get whomped with a 400% water damage attack (Base 100+ STAB 50+ Torrent 50x Supereffective 2).

Edit: Didn't see this one.

You're right, the STAB doesn't make it more powerful than a supereffective, and in the PVE game it's good to have a wide range of elements. I was assuming when the original comment said a Typhlosion against a Feraligatr that it was in a competitive setting with optimized sets.
