RP Interest Check

So, here's the idea. A historical preservation society hires Dingo and a group of mercenaries to explore an old, abandoned military base and see if there's anything of antiquated value inside and any leftover personal effects.

The bad news is that the old, abandoned military base is run by a malfunctioning computer system. And that system has decided to annihilate anyone who sets foot inside the base. Once the party is inside, all of the exits are sealed and the death-traps begin. This presents a small problem that can only be solved with violence and firearms.

Questions:

How do they know about the malfunctioning AI?

What's the goal of the RP?

How does the a large group of mercenaries allow themselves to be sealed inside?

I only ask out of curiosity. The concept is cool, very similar to an episode of Samurai Jak that I vaguely remember, but it would have to make sense for me to join.

They don't know about the AI. All they expect is some old defenses.

As for how they get sealed inside - the AI gets re-activated, woke up, or etc, and pulls a Red Queen on them. (Resident Evil movie, first one). Basically, it seals them in using old countermeasures that were hidden in the design, unknown to the people hiring the mercs.

That said, it's a salvage/treasure-hunting job so no one would bring high-grade explosives 'cause... that shit just brings old ruins down on your head, y'know?

That's how I envisioned starting the horror.

That was never mentioned. What kind of defenses? Why would they think those defenses would attack them if they knew nothing about the AI?

If this is going by the notion the the AI malfunctioning happens sometime AFTER they arrive, then yes this makes sense. But that was never originally stated, hence my worry.

Well, it's an old military base. Of course it'd have defenses, they'd just be old and antiquated. Sort of makes sense to say 'Hm... it's a former military base, extremely old, but we need to be careful because there might be systems running still.'

And as for the AI, I was thinking to introduce it sometime after the mercs start salvaging some of the old military gear, which'd likely set off some sort of warning system and wakes up the semi-defunct AI.

To explain my train of thought...

Most scifi military bases, as well as some modern facilities in our current day, contain systems designed to last. Usually a defensive mechanism of some variety, ranging from traps, simply sealing sections off, or something else. In our current day, we have keypads, keycards, retinal scanners, and so on. In older days, forts, like those from the Civil War, had booby-traps designed to kill attackers that got through their defenses.

SW bases, IMO, might follow a mixture of those two forms of defenses.

So the mercs might suspect that there are systems still active, designed to keep out 'attackers', so they'd be careful. Right?

Only, one might set off a trap, or an alarm system, or something of the sort. What follows would be the deranged AI and its insane machinations.

Pretty much what Nyx said. No one knew that the AI was there, let alone functioning. They were just expecting an old turret or two.

Then the crazy killer AI fired up and a whole buncha unexpected stuff started happenin'.
