Not encouraged to ask questions? O.o

Did you live in a cupboard under the stairs as well?

It boggles my mind when people say that sort of shit about their childhood. There is a difference between asking questions and being anti-authoritative. For my third birthday I was given the big book of why (2nd Ed.) because i questioned everything. I'm feeding a passion for curiosity. Questioning how things are done and why they are done that way is one of the few ways to progress as a society that doesn't necessarily involve bloodshed.

Rom, I didn't mean questioning in the form of how things work, where do babies come from and such. More along the lines of challenging values/world view.

Of course it made sense and continues to, they were your parents.

But in my experience, questioning everything leads to rewarding results, especially when it comes to your own foundations. When I encounter people in Ireland who have literally never been confronted on their religious faith, I never cease to be surprised by their reactions, it's as if I've told them their parents are not real, because it's something they've been conditioned to believe since birth.

So if you, Maverick and others are really responding to this topic with responses to the effect of ''My parents told me not to'', I don't really see those as worthy answers to the topic. I don't care about what your parents would want you to say, I care about what YOU actually think about it.

Parents should be facilitators after all, not indoctrinators.

I think I answered the 'why' I refrain from swearing part, so I'mma move on to your other inquiry.

Not to digress here, but my religion- Christianity- is one wherein folks are encouraged to ask questions. How else could one come to an understanding if they can't express the questions they have (in order to find the answers)?

I presume the folks you mentioned above are folks who hold the Christian world view, yes? If so, I would have to agree with you on the account that they were conditioned to believe. Why? Simple, Christianity is not a religion wherein one can come to through another's faith. One has to come to that believe on their own. Seek to understand on their own AND have find the ability to have faith on their own. Forced worship (conversion) stinks. No one should be forced to believe...
I've now really digressed so I'll stop here. PM if you want to continue.

I meant both. If you don't challenge world views than you stagnate...

Right. But my folks realized that and it ended up not being such a big deal!

Tbh, I'm all for people believing in whatever they like. Be it a deity or just good ol' science and the like.

I don't hold peoples beliefs against them. WhilenInmight not believe in God, I wouldn't dream of denying people the beliefs that bring them comfort and hope. But when you take those beliefs and use them as a guide for all people whether they share your beliefs or not, especially if you are in a position of power, I believe it is unjust.

I for one look forwards to the day when i can say what I wish and not have it considered "bad." I mean really, is it so bad to say certain things a certain way?

Indeed. But I realize that some people bring unsettling thoughts into conversations that would naturally upset someone who is faith oriented. As for saying things the way you like without it being considered bad? I don't think that'll ever be acceptable. Otherwise, we could talk about how much we dislike one another!

The way I see it, the power of a word diminishes the more you use it. I don't swear often for the same reason I don't tell every guy I go out for coffee with that I love him. The more you say it, the less it means. When I swear, I want it to mean something. Plus, I'm kind of an all or nothing person, and swearing at my job is a biiiiig no-no, so I'd rather not get into the habit.

Being a student of psychology im going to just throw this out there. Its been proven that the more you swear and curse when you're not upset the calming effect it can have when you're upset greatly diminishes.

What does Psychology say about us here in general? Don't answer. Just don't.

I love psychology.

I believe this as well, and I swear because I've made it my personal crusade to take all the power that every word has amassed over the centuries. Eventually I'll take all the power into myself and language as we know it will cease to exist leaving me as the only available form of communication.

He who controls the words controls the universe.
