Samuel watched as Penne headed off in search of a cave. It was possible on such a rocky world that natural caves had formed but the chances of finding one just off the cuff seemed slim. As Penne was walking away Samuel pulled out an data up-link tester. They'd left the computers on their ship running, this device would let him know if they could link up to the ships computer from here. Samuel punched in the required codes and left the tester to it's work. Khalen seemed to be doing his tests from here as well. Samuel hoped this spot would work out. The large cliff face would provide a natural barrier to prevent enemies from assaulting any direction but the way from which the small band had come. As Samuel was pondering this Khalen addressed him and asked why he was so interested in making contact with the locals. Samuel frowned, he'd pegged Khalen as a "my way or the hyperlane" kind of dominant alpha warrior. But those types of people didn't usually ask others for explanations.
"Well," Samuel started "Mostly I think part of our mission is to scout the planet and report any threats or problems there might be."
He continued on, "I think part of that entails engaging with the locals and see what they are like. Sure they are primitive and we can't speak the language, but if they try and kill us or anyone else on sight, it's something we should probably report. If they are nice and seemingly willing to help, trade or work; I think that's something HQ will want to know. If we ignore them completely then we have nothing to report and anyone who comes out here after us could be in for a lot of trouble...or missing out on a valuable resource in native help."
Samuel stopped as his up-link dinged. He picked it up and read the readout. "Partial Transfer. Interference level three."
"I'm not getting a good signal back to the ship." He reported to Khalen. "Probably these mountains blocking the signal. What do you have?" He said pointing to the scanner, wondering if it had picked up any anomalies. He glanced down the mountain path from which they had come up, the ship was invisible behind a solid block of mountains, even if they climbed to the precipice of the mountain Samuel was unsure if they would get better results, the mountains were so jagged and tall that unless they had direct line of sight to their target data transfers would be nearly impossible. A satellite in orbit would certainly be a big help and necessary for any listening or observation outposts.
