The freighter dropped out of hyperspace in the Outer Rim, not in the perimeter of any planet or moon but on the edges of an asteroid field. Rocks spiraled around the belt, daring pilots to traverse them, but this one had no intention to.

The Star’s Sanctum bore two pilots that endless night. The Force was their guide, nothing new there, but especially so as they traversed the uncharted; theirs was no world but an aimless asteroid that might have once belonged to one.

The mission was a briefing from the Council about a distress signal coming all the way from nowhere. It was difficult to discern whether the sender was a Jedi or an affiliate of the Order but they definitely knew how to code their transmission so that the right eyes and ears would receive it.

“Cut thrust for one thousand meter. Match vector. Ready the drone.” Vayla requested of her co-pilot, Padawan Leonkri, aiding her in this mission.

The ship’s thrusters burned short as it anchored into orbit around a large asteroid skirting the edges of the field. After a probe verified the terrain, failing to zone in on the signal’s exact position or what it looked like, the freighter found a safe path and set down toward the asteroid’s surface.

Whether the crew of the Star’s Sanctum would find sanctum or a snake pit remained to be seen. Vayla knew that, ultimately, anyone could have sent that distress signal, and whether ship or probe or something else, the Jedi were about to find out who and what.

Together, the pair of Knight and Padawan descended the ramp and stepped upon stone with space suits sealed tight. “That canyon over there,” Vayla affirmed from her scanner. “Yes, definitely in that area. Not far.”

For his first time in a space suit, Quin didn’t think he was doing so bad. It was only after he’d gotten off the ship when he realized that it was way different from walking on a planet. He and Jedi knight Mirana, who he’d taken to calling Master Mirror for no apparent reason whatsoever, were on a mission to find out who had sent out a distress call, and what for. It was his first real assignment, and he was certain that he was going to do his best. He just had to get used to walking/waddling like a nuna, but nowhere near as fast.

“You think whoever sent that signal is still there?” the padawan asked, looking over at the knight. Well, as much as he could anyway in his space suit. He was glad that their destination wouldn’t be far— they could get the mission done quickly and come back. Assuming they found what they wanted.

As the pair made their way towards the canyon, Quin looked around at the asteroid in wonder. It reminded him of a mini moon. He’d never been on one of these before, and even when he’d taken trips with his parents on Naboo they did what they could to avoid flying into an asteroid field. It made sense— it was dangerous, and it was a possibility that the signal had been sent out because the ship or whatever it was had taken extensive damage from an asteroid. Even so, Quin thought it was pretty cool to be walking on one.

“Master, have you ever been on an asteroid before?” he asked after a few minutes of silence. “This is my first time.”

“Possibly,” Vayla answered, gaze glued to her device. “Whether they are still breathing is another matter.” Another possibility was that the object was decades old and just now being heard. Maybe there was a glitch that caused a delay, maybe the beacon activated only now, maybe from impact, maybe there’s a worm in the rock waiting to swallow two Jedi whole.

Worry was not the way but forward was. Vayla looked up to take in the environment but couldn’t lie to herself; she was just as much taking in the scenery. The asteroid’s surface was as barren as it should have been but no less beautiful.

The surface beneath her space boots was brown against their light blue, but hints of gray surrounded the pair amid stone and clay. Hills curved away while jagged walls stabbed toward the stars, and those Vayla took in as well. So small a thing. So out of the way. So aimless. So...lost.

Leonkri’s question could not have come at a better time. “Once or twice. I’m certainly no rock hopper. It’s…almost liberating to be on one though...after a fashion.” Stars glittered all around, and on the horizon they married with the barren rock.

“Think of all the planets and moons out there, and how many have been settled or conquered, but here we are on one little stone in space like a leaf on an ocean…” She might have apologized for her rambling, having the tendency, but gave into silence while allowing for a response.

They traveled further, reaching the canyon. It was grand. Standing on the edge, Vayla’s scanner pleaded for them to proceed but for now she gazed down into the depths. “That’s deep. Even darker with all these ledges overshadowing it. Can’t see it but our quarry is…inside this quarry.” She shrugged. She couldn’t think of a better word.

“Well that’s kinda dark,” Quin commented, though he recognized that what Master Mirror was saying did make sense. He’d heard stories about many unfortunate pilots who’d found themselves stranded in an asteroid field and never made it out. When he was younger, he’d even caught his parents discussing how someone they knew was assassinated in one of these asteroid fields and the press had described it as an accident. Apparently there were giant worms too. Asteroids really were tricky places.

At hearing the Jedi knight’s musings about their being like a leaf on an ocean, Quin nodded in agreement. He didn’t think that kind of thought strange, and it was something he’d wondered about himself many times when he thought of his place in the galaxy.

“We won’t ever know it all,” he said, lightly kicking a rock in front of him to the side. “Or control it all, either. My parents seem to think you can, but I always found that idea unrealistic.”

The canyon itself was so deep that Quin had to lean over the edge to try to see the bottom, nearly falling over as a result. He shivered at the thought of just having to go down there, but then remembered that someone might need their help. Fortunately, he’d brought a rope with him that they could use if the Jedi knight didn’t have one already.

“Master Mirr…ana, I think this could help,” he said with a grin as he unclipped it from his spacesuit and held it out for her to see. Then he glanced down at the depths of the canyon again. “As for if it can get us all the way down there, I have no idea.”

Behind the glass of her helmet, Vayla smiled at her Padawan’s resourcefulness, though her lips just then threatened to curve the other way. Padawan. Perhaps just for this mission alone. She stared at him whether he stared back or not. Ke Eoto… Wurfuhlla… Where were her other two Padawans now?

“Where there’s a will there’s a way down, Quin-Quin.” That nickname generated on the spot, she hoped he loved it as much as hated it. “Teach them,” her master had taught her, “but don’t be afraid to tease them!”

Her own climbing gear combined with his would be more than enough to see the two descend safely into the darkness. Shadows would surround their light. In more ways than one out here in the middle of nowhere.

Securing their equipment and leverage, the Jedi allowed the stars to sail undisturbed overhead while the two of them sought to disturb the slumber of whatever waited for them in that canyon.

“Hanging in there, Pad?” Vayla was willing to negotiate “Quin-Quin” as much as “Master Mirror” but he was not escaping from “Pad” by any chance.

The young man descended a little above the woman, lighting the way with their helmets' lamps and otherwise. Climbing down, Vayla wondered how their tiny figures might look to the stars watching them get swallowed into the shadows. No matter. I am one.

“Hey! I’m supposed to be the one with the nicknames!” Quin exclaimed as he worked on tying his rope to a sturdy-looking rock just at the edge of the canyon. He couldn’t stop himself from grinning though. Quin-Quin. He liked that.

He switched on the light on the top of his helmet and started the descent, following a decent distance away from Master Mirror out of a nagging fear that he might fall and bring her down with him. It didn’t help that on one occasion, he’d nearly dislodged a stone that was about the size of his fist. It had fallen down the yawning chasm that was the canyon, and he hadn’t heard the sound of it making contact with the bottom. He blamed it on the hearing system of the spacesuit.

“Yeah- yeah I think so,” Quin said as he slowly lowered himself, trying his best to not kick any more rocks that might hit his companion. This was reminding him an awful lot of that time he fell down into the crystal cave with his master. She’d gotten a cut from that, but she managed to heal herself. This time though, he doubted that either of them would be alive by the time they hit the bottom.

“Wait a minute. Did you just call me Pad? He called down to her, a frown on his face. “I’ll have to come up with a new nickname for you!” Just as he finished his sentence, he felt the ledge that he was holding onto give way. His heart dropped along with the rest of him when he started falling down, passing the Jedi knight in a matter of seconds. He scrabbled at the side of the canyon, trying to get a good grip again, but it only slowed his fall by a little. It grew darker and darker the deeper he went, but eventually he was able to slide to a stop, clutching tightly to the side of the cliff. At this depth, he couldn’t even see the stars anymore, and the only source of light was his helmet.

Oh, great.

Vayla watched the stone sink into the darkness, passing harmlessly beside her but by a measure of a few feet only. She gulped, knowing what would happen if the next one were to rupture her suit. Or his.

“No problem! You’re doing fine, Pad! Just a teensy heads-up for the next pebble, okay?” She teased. Though hopefully there won’t be a next pebble.

“Keep your eyes focused. Your hands and feet will take care of themselves.” She taught. “Feel where you are. Focus, Pad.”

All the while, Vayla had to do the same, looking away to monitor her own descent which meant looking down. The darkness wasn’t getting any brighter but eventually they would see the signs of the crater’s surface.

Then she heard it, felt it. Rock shifted, broke and dropped the Padawan holding onto it. By the time Vayla looked up, Quin was already falling. The Knight’s instinct in that moment was to snatch for him. Not your hand!

Her fingers had missed. That wasn’t the answer. She reached out again, Quin was too far away, but that did not matter. The way she grabbed this time was through the Force. Pushing and pulling at balance, Vayla managed to stabilize her Padawan against the cliff and with his own efforts.

“Are you okay!?” There was no need to shout given the comm system in their helmets but she did so anyway. Calm, Vay. Calm. He seemed to be, whatever his answer. “I’m coming to you!”

Not waiting, Vayla pressed the mechanism on her rope and kicked off from the rock. The Knight flew down but did not fall. On the way, she tossed a flare toward the bottom of the canyon but would watch where it landed later.

She found footing at a ledge jutting out from the wall beside Quin’s position where light had all but vanished. “I’ve got you!” Vayla tethered him to her equipment, but that was only one problem. “Is your suit all right? Any punctures?” They would find that out together.

“I think I’m okay,” Quin said, doing the best he could to calm himself down. You’ll be fine. His heart was pounding, but he realized that there was nothing here except for him. He dared to look down just for a brief moment to see how far he had left to go, but the light from his helmet wasn’t enough to cover the entire area. Then he saw a flare go down past him, and realized that he was closer to the bottom than he’d imagined. That was one good thing.

Master Mirror had come down and landed beside him(if that was considered a landing) sooner than he expected. When she asked about his suit, Quin realized that he had no idea if it had been damaged during the fall. He hadn’t even given it a thought.

“Respirator seems to be working,” he said, checking on his breathing. No weird noises or anything. That was good. “Gravity is fine, comms are fine. I think I’m safe, for now.” He grinned and gave Master Mirror a thumbs up before looking down again where the flare had landed.

“I’ll be more careful this time,” Quin promised. “We’re almost there!” Before he was about to start climbing down again, he realized his own rope had been broken, and he had only Master Mirror’s to rely on now. “Oh. Aaand my rope’s gone. Heh.” He looked over at her sheepishly.

“Do you think you could get the two of us down?”

Vayla was more relieved than her space suit could convey that her Padawan was okay. A damaged suit could be mended with the equipment they had but it was no minor problem to have. The two Jedi exchanged thumbs up at that problem not being a reality.

“I know, Pad,” the Knight reassured the apprentice’s promise. “We do this together or not at all.” That was her own promise and she had made it before stepping foot on the asteroid. Though, they had a problem after all.

“Let’s see…” Checking her gear on account of a missing rope, Vayla gave her own a tug; it was safe and secure all the way up to the ledge above the crater. “Yep, no worries on that front.”

Next she peered below and spotted the flare. It was close enough; an ember in the night just bright enough to illuminate the ground. Glad of that, Vayla dropped another flare, this one at a short distance from the other to create a kind of landing zone.

“Our lights aren’t enough,” she stated the obvious. “Ignite your saber. I won’t be able to hold mine.” She said while keeping one hand on the rope and gesturing for Quin to do the same. Her arm moved to wrap around him.“Ready?”

Vayla would wait but there wasn’t much choice here. Quin was tethered to her suit but not as well as her suit was tethered to the rope. The lightsaber was like a flash light; alone, not enough either, but every little helped. “Down we go.” They descended, Knight and Padawan, and the crater’s surface waited to cradle them.

Quin watched nervously as the Jedi knight pulled on her own rope to test its strength. Since they were down to just one, he didn’t want to imagine what would happen if that one broke too. It seemed that it wasn’t damaged though, and the woman’s words confirmed it. After hearing that, Quin released the breath he’d been holding and grabbed onto her rope along with her.

“Yep, I got you,” the padawan responded, igniting his lightsaber as Master Mirror had requested. He held it near his side, though not too close to the rope or to either of them. The green light generated from his weapon-turned-illuminator was enough to see what was directly ahead of them, but not much more than that.

After a few more minutes, they had reached the ground in between the two flares.

“I knew we could do it,” Quin commented with a grin as he used his free hand to untie himself from the Jedi knight. He was sure that she didn’t want to drag him around like a useless sack of meat any more than he wanted to potentially slow her down. Besides, she would be stuck with him later anyway when they would make their way back up… somehow, Quin thought as he looked up at the looming wall.

“Well, time for us to find where that signal came from,” he said, glancing over at Master Mirror. “You still have your tracker, right?”

Together… Vayla thought after Quin’s comment about the same. It might not have mattered much, would not have, were it not for this Padawan being the third after two. No track record of death, they were still alive and breathing as far as she knew, but the Knight was that much more determined to make sure the same fate awaited this one.

Stone in space, leaf on ocean… Dismissing her musings, Vayla took a breath of the air inside her helm where the atmosphere outside would have stolen it without a care in the world, this one or that one. The Force was temperamental like that. Sometimes.

“We’ve got a signal,” the Knight confirmed, half-expecting faulty equipment to be an ongoing problem. She looked one way, saw the black sea that surrounded the faint light of their position where two flares crackled; the other way, no different, but the Force confirmed what the scanner conveyed. “It’s this way.”

The Jedi marched along, footsteps so slow and fragile against a surface whose gravity was ungracious. Leaving the flares behind for the return home, Vayla relied on her headlamps and the flashlight in her hand, a lightsaber now more akin to a glowstick but no less useful. They could use both.

“There!” She saw it. In the darkness, nestled into a crevice of a wall of rock, light shone on the unmistakable proportions of an object that had come from anywhere but here. Curved metal, grayed over as though decomposing, but otherwise intact. So far. Could be damage somewhere.

The discoverer in Vayla Mirana, the Mirror Master, wrestled against the Jedi Knight that cautioned her. Ship or probe or something else, the duo were about to find out, right as Vayla’s torch lit up one word: “Pelican”.

Quin followed closely behind the Jedi knight as the pair made their way towards the wreck, an eager grin on his face when he finally spotted the crash. It probably wasn’t anything to be happy about given the circumstances, but he was glad to have found something after the long and difficult climb down the canyon. He found himself growing more curious as they neared it, and he went on in front of Master Mirror when she shined a light on the object to get a closer look. Pelican, the word read. Quin’s smile faded. No. I told him to stay. Still, he couldn’t shake the nagging feeling off.

He brushed aside some of the dust that had collected on the thing and peered into the window of the cockpit, using his lightsaber to see what was inside. It was clear now that it was a ship, but there was no apparent pilot. Given the state of the craft though, he doubted that anyone could have survived the impact. He looked closer, and saw what looked like a metal arm between what remained of the pilot’s seat and the front viewport. Leaning forward and using his lightsaber to cut a small circle in the transparisteel so that he could get to the arm, he reached in and pulled it out. Sure enough, inscribed on the inside of the elbow was the Naboo royal crest, and underneath it, an inscription of Leonkri.

Quin turned off his lightsaber, holding the arm close to his chest. He backed away from the wreckage and walked over to the Jedi knight.

“It’s nothing,” he said with a shake of his head. “There’s nothing to be found here. We can go.”

Pelican. The name did not ring any chimes for Vayla. As her flashlight roamed along the length, capturing the size of a ship, she gestured for the pair to split up and circle it. Time was on their side all the way out here in the middle of nowhere, in the expanse, and judging from the damage on the hull there was no one inside waiting on those outside.

While Quin approached the bow, his master took to stern. Every vessel had a story, the ones that sailed and the ones that crashed, and part of this one’s were the broken thrusters. A rock was wedged between two, having ruptured both. And about the size as what broke off from a Padawan’s grip.

Vayla’s light led the way as she moved on down the port, illuminating a tear on the side as though a rancor had mistaken the ship for dinner. Likely brushed up against a ledge. That’s all it would take. The torch shifted to the surface. There was an object, a box about the size of her hand and decorated, and likely worth its own weight and then some. She grabbed it and moved on toward the cockpit where Quin was coming from.

There was nothing wrong with Quin’s assessment, if there was nothing to be found in a wreckage then there was nothing new there, except he came out holding a metal arm instead of a black box. Vayla turned her head so that the light from her helmet shined over her Padawan’s just enough to see his face.

“That tells me there’s something.” I can sense it, child. She didn’t show him her own box yet but it wasn't invisible. “What did you find, Quin Leonkri?”

He could see that Master Mirror was holding something in her hand that she hadn’t shown him yet. He couldn’t quite make out what it was, but he decided it would be better to explain first, since she’d already asked.

“This was my ship,” he said with a rueful glance back at the wreckage. “It was a gift from my parents for my birthday. It was actually the one I used to run away, to Yavin, I mean.” He looked down at the arm in his hand. “This… belonged to my protocol droid. KZ-10. Or I liked to call him Casey.”

Then Quin sighed. “I should have known this would happen. He wasn’t programmed for flying. I sent him and the Pelican on the way back to Naboo to tell my parents that I’m still alive. I knew they’d have been worried sick. Probably still are, since the ship never got there.” He frowned, then looked at Master Mirror and the thing in her hand. “You haven’t found a scroll, have you? I wrote them a message. You might have found it inside a box.” He would have made a hologram, but he’d found himself unable to get the words out when it came time to start the recording, already picturing his parents’ furious faces in front of him.

“I put in the frequency for the Jedi distress signal so that I’d know if something went wrong. I guess the council got to it before I did,” he said with a shrug. “Only problem is, my parents probably think I’m dead.”

Whether he knew it or not, Quin had the entire attention of the woman standing before him. Vayla had been briefed enough on the boy’s background, knowing he hailed from a noble family, which helped explain the ship. Were it not for the damage, it would fetch a fine price on the market.

So, we come full circle. That Casey did not manage to complete his mission did not mean that all was lost. No, we have won something this day. “Don’t worry, Quin-Quin.” Vayla smiled, hoping to make her ward do the same. “All of this is for a reason.”

Pausing to scan the stars and watch them wander, the Knight stepped toward the Padawan. “The Force has not forgotten us even out here. Even in the darkest places, it never forgets the light… I don’t know what I have found in this box. I found only a box. But it is not mine to open.”

She reached out. “It is yours. But, if you wish, we can open it together.” Whether he took it or not, Vayla went on. “You were brought to this rock in the ocean to open a box as much as close one. Casey came as far as he could, and now you have come to complete his journey.”

Though, it was not always clear what road to take on a journey like theirs. “Whatever you choose to do now, all I want you to know…is that I am here for you.”

Quin sighed, looking down at the arm in his hand. “Yeah. A reason, I guess,” he said before glancing back at Master Mirror. He smiled back for a brief moment before looking at the box that she offered him. It was the very one that contained his message.

“No. You deserve to see it too,” he said as he took the box from the Jedi knight. Someone has to see my message, even if the people who it was meant for didn’t.” He grinned slightly at that. Opening the box, Quin expected to find the piece of paper that he’d slipped in covered in his scrawly handwriting. Instead, he found… a hologram? He frowned. “I never put this in here.”

Clicking on the button that would reveal the message, he held it up so that Master Mirror would be able to see. A shaky, faint blue hologram of a man appeared, and it was no one that he recognized, though he looked vaguely familiar. The padawan creased his brows.

“Quin Leonkri,” the man said in a voice as smooth as silk. “I regret to inform you that your parents were on Mon Cala when the attacks took place. Unfortunately, they were unable to make it off the planet.” Quin blinked. The man pulled out a piece of paper, one which had markings on it that Quin recognized. “‘One day I’ll return and make you proud, not as Senator of Naboo, but as a Jedi knight.’ What a touching message, too. It is a pity that they will never get the chance to read it.” The man paused, and Quin couldn’t help but glance up at Master Mirror. Something wasn’t right about this message.

“I must ask that you come back immediately to Naboo. Here you will be assuming their assets as the rightful heir, and I am certain that you wish to attend their funeral. Meet me at-” The hologram flickered then switched off, and it refused to turn back on as Quin pressed the button a couple more times. What was that?

“I know they aren’t dead,” he said as he shook his head, putting the object back inside the box and handed it back to the Jedi knight. “I can feel that they’re still alive. He was lying.” But why?

Open a box, close a box, Quin was making a decision whether he knew it or not. Vayla had seen Padawans his age come and go; some ran from home, thought the Jedi Order would be their new one, discovered that their parents were an even stronger force; their real home.

Whatever Quin Leonkri did now, well, a hologram in place of a piece of paper had frozen both Jedi where they were. Oh…no… Vayla bit her lip at the news that the blue man just then dropped as surely as a ship falling upon an asteroid.

But…that voice. It wasn’t always easy to discern a hologram’s facial expressions, what with the static and such, but if nothing else Vayla heard a certain tone in the voice that seemed off course. Un…sympathetic…maybe?

Torn between comforting and investigating her Padawan, Quin revealed a vital truth just then. The Force connected beings to one another, especially family members, and Vayla had little doubt that Quin felt what she did not.

“Tell me, Quin…” She hesitated, searching for purchase in the situation. Had she no helmet on she would have pinched her chin between finger and thumb. “...Do you recognize this individual?” Quin answered. “If he is not telling the truth then it is because he has something to gain... What might that be, Quin Leonkri?"

Why was the man lying? For that matter, did the Pelican crash? Or was it made to? Troubling thoughts for a Jedi. But I am a Jedi Shadow. We search for trouble where we can.

“Vaguely. I think I’ve seen his face before,” Quin answered with a frown. “It was a long time ago, though.” Master Mirror asked about why he would lie, and Quin bit the inside of his cheek. He didn’t know. It didn’t make sense to lie about something like that. What could the man gain from getting Quin to go back? He didn’t even want his parents’ money. He had no use for it. Surely the man knew that, especially if he’d seen his letter? Maybe he wanted Quin to give it to him instead. That he wouldn’t be willing to do, but it would have been too obvious of a plan. How would he explain how he got the money? That someone had given it to him?

“I think… he wants to use me,” Quin mused, studying the box and thinking about the message. Something about his parents… then he realized something that made him freeze. Quin, why didn’t you see this earlier?

“Master,” he said urgently, grabbing one of the Jedi knight’s arms. “If he wants me to go back to Naboo, that means he has my parents. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to get that letter.” The panic inside him started to grow as increasingly morbid possibilities raced through his mind.

“Master, they’re alive now, but what if he kills them if I don’t go? I couldn’t hear the time he wanted to meet, what if it’s soon? What if it’s too late when I get there? Master, what do I do?”

It was a shameful notion, that of a grown man wanting to use someone not much older than a child for their own personal gain, but what was worse was how common it was in a galaxy that catered to it. Stars as my witness, were it not for the light, there would be only darkness.

Her gaze had drifted back to them. Vayla Mirana could ever become so distracted, so deep in a daydream, that it sometimes took someone grabbing her arm to snap her out of a trance. Right now was no different.

The Knight looked upon the Padawan right then and there, heartbeat increasing against her space suit, breath conversely steady. She knew what the boy was feeling, felt it for him, shared it. Together… As one, then. She knew what to do.

“We do what Jedi do, Pad.” Smiling, she placed a hand on his shoulder. “We investigate, we approach and, Force forbid…” She looked back up. I do what Shadows do. Vayla’s eyes met Quin’s. “We take action. One way or the other, Quin Leonkri, we will make sure your parents stay alive. That’s what Jedi do.”

Quin calmed down a bit when he felt Master Mirror’s hand on his shoulder, steadying his breathing as much as he could. It was encouraging to know that he wouldn’t be alone. Although he considered the Jedi to be a part of his family now, he couldn’t forget all his parents had done for him. However much they wanted him to leave his dreams behind, he knew that they still loved him and only wanted what was best.

Meeting her gaze as she looked into his eyes, Quin nodded along to her words. “You’re right, Master. That’s what we’ll do.” Helping people in need. It’s what any Jedi would do.

Looking one more time at Casey’s arm, he put it down right beside the wreck. Casey had completed his mission after all, and now Quin would begin his. He looked up at the foreboding wall in front of him, knowing that the stars were just out of sight. If we can climb out of this and still see the light, we can climb out of anything.
