DESCRIPTION
The TIE/ST starfighter, better known as the TIE Standard, TIE Fighter or Eyeball, is the latest iteration of the TIE family of starfighters originally developed by Sienar Fleet Systems in the last days of the Clone Wars. Developed and refined for well over a century, the TIE line has generally gotten more complex and specialized with each new design; the TIE/ST, by contrast, represents an effort by Sienar-Jaemus - current custodians of the TIE lineage - to get "back to basics", producing a starfighter which - while boasting some modern features to keep it competitive - returns the TIE to the simplicity of its roots.

The TIE/ST borrows heavily from Sienar's original TIE/LN starfighter, and is still based around Sienar's revolutionary Twin Ion Engine propulsion system, which incorporates no moving parts and is as famous for its easy maintenance requirements as its performance and distinctive wail. The TIE/ST - like most TIEs before it - is little more than an engine/cockpit pod flanked by two large vertical panels, which mount an array of solar collectors that augment the TIE's reactor output. Primarily, however, these panels serve as heat radiators, improving the tiny craft's thermal efficiency. Unlike some of its predecessors, the TIE/ST is equipped with a full life support system, making it much more convenient to fly, as it does not require the pilot to wear a bulky, sealed environmental suit.

The TIE/ST is better armed and protected than many of its forebearers, incorporating the standard twin medium laser cannons found on most TIEs, as well as a 4-shot concussion missile launcher, giving it an improved ground strike and anti-ship capability. The TIE/ST is also shielded, if lightly, giving it a bit more durability in combat. In the event of an emergency, an ejection seat is still a standard feature. In terms of performance, the TIE/ST is an improvement over the old TIE/LN, with refinements of the TIE engine allowing it to reach a top speed 110 MGLT; the ship also boasts a class 4 hyperdrive, allowing it to traverse interstellar distances and freeing it from its predecessor's dependence on carriers and/or local bases. Maneuverability is still excellent.

The TIE/ST, while considered the future of Sienar-Jaemus' starfighter division, faces an uphill battle in terms of establishing itself in the market, even as the Galaxy continues to destabilize. It faces competition from its arch rival, Incom-FreiTek's new T-6/5 Light-X interceptor, but its undoing may actually come from its past, and the countless millions of perfectly serviceable TIE/LN starfighters still in service throughout the Galaxy.

LEGALITY
Restricted. TIE/STs are starfighters, and are subject to extra licensing requirements and increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create an update of the old TIE/LN starfighter incorporating more contemporary technology.
