Following tense negotiations, members of the Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council narrowly voted in favor of the declaration put forward by South Africa, with 23 votes in favor and 19 against.

Backers included the U.S., the European Union, Brazil and other Latin American countries. Those against included Russia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Pakistan. China, Burkina Faso and Zambia abstained, Kyrgyzstan didn't vote and Libya was suspended from the rights body earlier.

The US is backing Gay Rights abroad.... and yet there's a bill that just got passed in the Tennessee state senate that makes it illegal for teachers and counselors to discuss homosexuality in K-8 schools on threat of being charged with a misdemeanor.

Goddamn hypocrites...

Except the Federal government doesn't get to decide on gay marriage laws of the state.

Calling the US hypocrites in this situation is like me calling you a hypocrite for liking women 'cuss your little brother thinks they have cooties.

It's not marriage law... it's Education. As in the thing that the US Federal Department of Education monitors. As in the thing that the US Federal Department of Education is supposed to ensure that things that receive government funding are not using discrimination.

Bottom line, this is a clearly discriminatory law against people who either are homosexual or support equal rights for homosexuals. If you say the word in the class room or guidance office setting you can be put on trial for a misdemeanor. Either Tennessee needs to can this law, or they don't get to receive any federal funding for their public school system. And the Federal Government has had the months to make that position clear, and they havent. Because of that inaction, I call the US Federal Government and it's pushing for gay rights and equality abroad hypocrites, because they won't make the stand here at home.

You can thank the politicians for that. They won't risk meddling with that in fear it'll ruin their reputations and not get reelected. Some politicians and judges have even been impeached for support. I think Iowa fired half it's Supreme Court judges because many of them stated that banning gay marriage was unconstitutional. Or was it Idaho?

It was Iowa Weiss and they removed three judges based on their ruling against a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. While that is not something the Fed Govt can rule on, it is semi-depressing to see so many people fighting tooth and claw to protect the sanctity of a thing that half of them are violating anyway...

And yes, career politicians unwilling to do what is right and biased media coverage polarizing both sides of the aisle into either gun toting religious fundies or bleeding heart tax em til they got none socialists kind of makes progress difficult.

Back on topic....

Yay UN! Hopefully now they'll actually take more of a stand against the countries that still have homosexuality punishable by death...

Amen to that! Getting off my cynical high horse, I really am happy to see that the United Nations is adopting this measure. It's a gesture until they actually start enforcing the issue, but I do think it's an important step. Hopefully they don't just release tersely worded declarations suggesting that Country X stop stoning their homosexuals to death and actually do something

I don't like moral relativism.

Yes, it's not a good thing that we have bullshit like in Tennessee, or that we don't allow gay marriage in most states, but we're not Iran. We're not all these other extremist countries who kill gay people because an ancient book told them to.

The United States has every right to push for this in order to stop nonsense like in Iran. You don't have to be perfect to support something like this.
