Varyn had put good distance between him and the academy when it finally happened. He was sitting in a restaurant eating dinner when the bomb detonated. He could see it through the window, a flash of fire and smoke billowing into the sky.
Everyone nearby gasped and looked out at the horizon, some standing and others trying to go see what had happened. For Varyn, he simply sat there, mouth slightly open, and watched. It was a surreal feeling. He knew what was coming, but it somehow felt... strange. It wasn't the academy he had been at, but it could have been.
He couldn't say that he felt very sad about the faculty that had been killed. It was why he had come here, but the lines... they had become more blurred than he had expected. Here, alone, he didn't have to put on any face.
And so he lingered for a moment before paying and heading back. He'd need to look as shocked as everyone else, but... that might not be as hard to fake as he had expected.
