Varyn would help him to his feet if he needed it, and just like that they were ready to go. It reminded him vaguely of the trek through the jungle he had made with Thelian. That seemed like a lifetime ago now, and for Thelian, it really was.

Touché, he said cocking his head to the side slightly in agreement when Wodan mentioned being the only ones to survive. He glanced back at the ship as Wodan asked if they were going to destroy it.

Not yet. We can do it once we're all off, but there's still a chance we are going to need it, he said. He knew it wasn't protocol, but screw protocol. Protocol was just the best thing to do in most situations, but this wasn't most situations.

Oh geez, that sounds terrible, he said in response to "Varynton." We could also call it Wodanville, he said with a snicker. I'm sure it'll get handed some long, uninteresting string of designation numbers. If the locals don't already have a name for it, he said. Of course, their protocol droid was still on the Intrepid, so even communicating with any locals they might find could be tricky.

Alright, Wodan. I'm easily bored, how are you planning to entertain me during the hike? he asked, clearly joking in what he was saying and in a pretty good mood despite their situation. Things definitely weren't going as planned, but at least no one was dead. Of course, Wodan's arm was broken, but the conversation and joking might help keep his mind off the pain as well.

“I mean it has a ring to it.” He chuckled back at the Champion. “Though you are probably right about the number thing, either that or it will be named after Anaris.” It was common for new finds to be named after either the finders or more commonly their rulers or financers. Wodan continued pushing through the brush; the spiralled foliage was springy and easily pushed aside by the advancing duo.

The pain killers had fully taken hold, the Firrerrian could hardly feel any pain as he walked. Though he was sure any sudden movement would bring it all flooding back. How to keep him busy? Wodan looked back over his shoulder at the Champion, a cheeky smirk plastered across his face. “I spy, with my little eye. Something beginning with ‘W’.”

Varyn continued making his way over the mountainous terrain at decent speed as he thought about the name.

Anarisia doesn't sound too great either, he said. He actually started laughing as Wodan mentioned spotting something starting with a "W."

You know, you just might end up getting a good evaluation out of this after all, he said. Are you even allowed to use... was all the further he got before something tore through the air between them, slapping against the ground.

Varyn could feel the air around them charged with energy, like static electricity ready to shock him at any moment that was left behind in the wake of the fire from the weapon. Another shot followed with a pellet from some sort of slugthrower coming a moment later.

The latter slammed against Varyn's chest plate and momentarily knocking the wind out of him as he tried to adjust himself to the sudden attack they seemed to find themselves under.

He stumbled back, trying to shout about getting to cover but finding the air in his lungs was still seized from the impact. Instead, it came out as a low cough as Varyn stumbled behind a large boulder.

Wodan had a smirk on his face after his genius idea to name any random plant after himself to trick Varyn. But this ingenious scheme was ripped to pieces by the arrival of a bolt of lightning crashing into the space between the two Sith. As Varyn was slammed backwards, Wodan was launched forwards, the explosion knocked him prone on his stomach, his broken arm smacking into the ground causing waves of pain to wash over himself.

He tried to scramble to his feet, but with only one arm to push up with it was less than gracious and far from quick. He was upright for about three seconds before his haste caused him to slip on something and send him tumbling down. Though the clumsy collapse saved him as another shot from the vicious weapon arc’d over his head crashing into the ground nearby.

Spinning onto his back he sent out a wave of Force energy in the general direction of the enemy hoping to hit something, even if it just pushed them off their balance he hoped it would be enough for Varyn to act on.

Varyn winced with each breath he took and another slug slammed into the rock he was hiding behind. Chips of stone flew off in every direction and the hiss-snap of the slug continuing on sent a chill down his spine.

He couldn't see Wodan from his position, but he could sense him in the Force. Everything seemed to melt away as his mind transitioned to a different mode. A mode of violence and death.

He reached down and grabbed one of his saber hilts from his belt, letting the Force flow through him and then the weapon, into the crystal until the two were one. He closed his eyes, focusing on the world around him as he bent the Force to his will.

And then he sent the saber. He leapt up and with a flick of his wrist the hilt whipped across the battlefield, the blade activating at the last moment before slamming through the heart of the nearest attacker.

He clutched at his chest with a shrill shriek, falling over to the ground. This served to, of course, draw a great deal of attention and gunfire Varyn's way and he slipped back behind the rock.

Can you get a flank on them with their attention drawn? he asked, hoping he wouldn't need to pop back out again, but he'd do it if he had to.

The long grass concealed the other Sith from Wodan, which was a concern, even with The Force it was hard to coordinate themselves without being able to see each other. Pushing himself up from the floor he tried to search with both his eyes and The Force to see if could find out where their attackers were coming from.

As he stood up Wodan had to immediately duck as Varyn’s lightsaber spun through the air. The blade arcing through the air, even though it nearly decapitated the Firrerrian it did do a good effort of cutting the surrounding foliage down to a more usable height.

The new sightlines revealed a pair of multi-limbed creatures, wielding massive almost archaic looking guns. One turned its head quickly to face the Firrerrian, on instinct Wodan shot his hand out, a wave of energy smashed into the creature's forehead, snapping its head back violently. He then grasped at its throat with the Dark Side, slowly crushing the thick oesophagus. Though the creature's muscles resisted the Dark Energy long enough for the second one to notice. “A little help here.” He shouted.

Varyn could see slightly better from the upper part of the rock, and from that area he leapt forward. He could feel Wodan's grip on the other man and he moved in against the second of the alien creatures. It was all going well at first and Varyn managed to close with the first of the aliens, cleaving through from right shoulder to nearly the belly button.

That was when the explosion hit. It seemed to have come from a small starship of some sort and its laser cannons. They tore into the ground near the Champion and the detonation felt like a punch, sending him flying once again and knocking the wind from his lungs.

The ship - it could be presumed - was altered to withstand the magnetic fields of the planet or else it simply knew where to fly. More cannon fire tore down along the ground searching for either of the two Sith as Varyn pulled himself along the ground and toward the cover of a cave on a lower ledge of the cliff, half-dropping, half-rolling below.

Get cover! he shouted into his comm though it was probably a little redundant. We need to get out of here and regroup! he said. His whole body hurt and wanted nothing more than to quit but he pressed forward anyway. There wasn't any other option because he was not going to die here.

The time Varyn brought him was enough for the Acolyte to fully crush the neck of the creature, crushing both its oesophagus and the spine behind. The creature dropped to the floor as Wodan released it, just in time for the body to be evaporated by the laser fire from the strafing attack craft.

Mud, stones, turf and assorted plants were launched into the air as the ship's laser cannons ripped into the surrounding landscape. Wodan started sprinting away from the attack sight, in a near parallel motion to the Champion. “I don’t see any cover.” He shouted back panically, though in that panic he had forgotten to press the button on the comm so Varyn wouldn’t hear his screams.

The ship swivelled round in the air, it moved slightly more sluggish than a normal aircraft of its design. Perhaps whatever allowed it to fly in this extreme gravity field meant it wasn’t as nimble as it should be. That split second delay in its turn allowed the pair to make a little bit of distance from the ambush sight.

Wodan had run past the entrance to the cave where Varyn had scrambled into and was running across the bottom of the cliff face, panic was starting to set in as the ship began its attack run. With the cliff to his left and the ship to his right, he was certain to be blasted into a million pieces. The slight whirl of the laser’s power up circle signalled the Firrerrian’s end, closing his eyes he ran as fast as he could.

Four steps later, the floor gave way. Dead grass and moss covering an old entrance to a cave. Laser fire ripped into the cliff face above as Wodan smashed into the side wall of the cave, a snap signalling a fresh break in his arm. He tumbled down about fifteen feet, gashing various parts of his body against the sharp rock before coming to a stop in a heap at the bottom. Debris from the laser fire above collapsed on top of him, but none of it was larger than finger so it caused nothing but discomfort for the Firrerrian.

A few short seconds later and the laser fire stopped, Wodan tried to raise his head, the sounds of the ships engines flared for a moment as it flew around the small battlefield, before it began to dissipate as Wodan passed out.

Varyn took cover in the cave and would have grabbed Wodan to drag him inside if it weren't for the fact that Varyn could barely even stand. He was laying on his side and saw Wodan dart past and tried to push himself up.

He could hear Wodan's panicked screams but they were so far in the back of his mind, he could barely even think about it at the moment.

How did I let this happen?! What is even happening?! he asked himself. He was starting to wonder if he was cut out for command. In the first hours of his command he'd lost a shuttle, they were under attack, he and multiple other people were wounded. It was a miracle none of them were actually dead yet, though he wondered to himself if the pilots had even made it to the RV point. At this rate, he suspected they hadn't.

He could hear more cannon fire outside and then an eerie silence seemed to settle over the planet.

Wodan, you alive? Wodan? Wodan!? he hissed into his comms, each hail sounding slightly more concerned than the last as he still tried to keep his voice down. He reached out with the Force, trying to feel for his semi-familiar presence and... he felt something.

---

When Wodan would finally awaken he would find Varyn sitting next to him under a small overhanging of rocks. Clearly the Champion had dragged him here from where he'd fallen.

He was now stripped of most of his armor plates and his helmet had been removed. He was also notably barely moving. Every part of Varyn's body hurt and his spirit wasn't doing much better. Fortunately, his years as a Shadow had taught him to conceal the frustration, confusion, disappointment, and anger that he felt. He'd tried to busy his mind in the silence, so he was fiddling with electronics in his hand as if trying to raise a signal on a comlink. Unfortunately, technology was not the Champions absolute forte so the process hadn't been going particularly well.

Wodan slowly came too, his eyes fluttering awake to the sights of the small den Varyn had found for the pair. A little movement signalled that most of the cuts and bruises he had suffered from the fall were already on their way to recovery. His arm however still throbed, the pain killers had worked themselves through his system and the second break had set him back at least an hour.

“I don’t think we can call it Varynton anymore.” He said as he pulled himself up with his good arm. A quick shuffle and his back was against the cool rock which made up most of their little camp. Closing his eyes again he tried to not concentrate on the pain radiating from his left arm, instead he tried to remember anything from the fight a little time before.

“You look right as roses.” He said with a smile, pointing at the mechanical hand. “Did you damage it in the fight?”

Varyn looked back at Wodan as the other man mentioned he looked a little beat up, and Varyn nodded. Guess we can call this trip at least informative. Might be worth taking some more scans and then reporting back to command, he said. It truncated their trip to be sure, but so far no one on their side had been killed, though a shuttle had been lost.

Champion Atrix, we've located a safe a path to your location and a comm frequency that can clear the static, one of the scientists said over the comms and Varyn found himself letting out a heavy sigh of relief.

Wounded, cut off, and undersupplied, he found himself just happy to be alive. When the shuttle set down, he thought to himself just how little pity he'd feel when the Empire came back and crushed these people into submission. They'd attacked without warning, nearly killed both of them... they got what they had coming.
