He presumably means the gap in the cross guard that is still metal, and thus, a vulnerable point. On the other hand, that gap would let someone have their hand up to the guard without it being seered off like if it were all saber edge. We'll have to see how the fight choreography plays it - ie, if people should be rightly able to aim straight for it, or if the owner's fighting style makes that too difficult.

Ahhh. :speechless: Yeah that would make it pretty impractical. I could assume the top section of the hilt is made of a lightsaber resistant material, but that would be pure speculation.

See ya point though.

I think it should be angled so it would look more like the legends Crossguard lightsaber and look like more of an actual claymore.

Honestly, the cross-guard looks stupid, but to me it's practical. In real life, longsword techniques have you sliding the blade down your opponent's sword to attack, so you need a cross-guard to pull off the technique properly. If the cross-guard there has light coming out of it to block a lightsaber, then I don't have too much of a problem with it. Perhaps Abrams is going to make the duels look more realistic?

That being said, the teaser does feel like a fan-film. At the same time, though, it has the same feel as the OT, which was what made Star Wars great in the first place. I'm feeling optimistic, but I want to wait for the trailer to pass full judgement.

Maybe he turns the main blade off and uses it as a lightsaber pick-axe....

I hate to be that kind of fan, but the trailer looks like a fan film. Disappointing, but it's early in post-production so I shouldn't expect TOO much.

This. All of this. That first shot on Tatooine, John Boyega's character shot and glance at the armor, the tacky Darth voice over, the camera angles, the glare... I've seen fan films with better execution and cinematography.

Although that bit at the end with the Falcon instantly drew me in so we'll have to see.

Debating realism over space monk laser fights on the internet is a terrible idea.

It's a logical explanation though. That's like saying that it wouldn't make sense to put a scope on a blaster because they'd do it in real life equivalents.

But anyways, I'm thinking way too much on this. With it possibly going towards more traditionally western designs and maybe even western type combat, perhaps we'll see less of the shenanigans from Prequels and spin offs where it's "Hey lets spin lightsabers around frantically to make it more intense." and more traditional bashing at each other.

Just look at that and tell me you'd be willing to try and do some spinny crap with that hilt.

Except there's no real life version of a laser sword, so its pointless to argue about them?

western type combat
You mean non-western type combat is all about the spinning sabers? news2me

There really is no set East vs. West origin to saber combat. It is entirely made up for an audience spectacle, from my understanding.

There's no real life equivalent of a laser gun either, but there's a comparative. Take the laser out and it's just a gun. Take the laser out of a sword and it's just a sword.

Just how I see and base a lot of the logic of the weapons (and other things) of the SW universe.

/shrug

Edit: @Lavi. I mean I'm not a choreographer, military historian, or have any real backing behind my thoughts. I guess I view swordfighting in Western to be more bulky, broad swings and Eastern type to be more speed based jabs. But then again, there are elements of fencing in SW combat, so idk. Just ignore me.

You do know the way they do lightsabers is to have a prop in the persons hands which they layer effects onto later? So yeah, even within the process of filming there is a real world mechanic that must be considered when talking about combat.

People need to note that although there is practicality in design, combat is not particularly logical either. WWII battleships engaged each other tens of miles away from each other: they may never have line-of-sight of each other the entire time they are battling. Even in the original trilogy, at Endor, capital ships were basically within broadside range of each other when they battled. Actual engagements in such a technologically advanced society should be at ranges where fleets cannot see each other without proper sensor systems, with the exception of MAYBE fighters and bombers (but they would also possess equipment that allows them to attack at extreme ranges).

The entirety of Star Wars tech is a mashup of sci-fi equipment and combat doctrine of past eras. It doesn't have to make sense to feel Star Wars, but the OT tech do look like they are practical from a functionality standpoint.

I liked the film. It wasn't really bad. I liked the new MF, and the voice of the Sith. I also liked the fact that the teaser film showed three planets, and some fighting scenes. Overall, it wasn't really bad.

Make a guard out of phrik or cortosis. Oh wait. That doesn't look super flashy and special.

Or, hear me out here, the hilt could be made of those as well.
