I don't know whether or not I should be proud for making that mistake, or if you should feel ashamed for noticing it.

Perhaps both.

The design of the Kryptonian Armour worn by Zod, the design of the ships we see throughout the trailer, the design of the ship interior we see Clark inside of, the House of El symbol he's holding looks like a prop from the first season of Smallville and the design of the ships we see throughout the trailer lack any kind of iconic design to them. I much preferred the original crystal ship designs, because they were striking and impressive. This whole thing was just bland as shit.

Although I'll agree, Cavill certainly looks the part.

I'll say this, you've gotten a lot more out of a two and a half minute trailer than I did.

I should feel ashamed. Lots and lots of shame.

The suit actually doesn't look half bad here...this movie better not suck, because the marketing has left much to be desired.

Well this doesn't really make sense. The lady we see in the trailer is dressing nothing like Jimmy would. And she's running away from the destruction instead of taking a picture. I don't care if you turn Jimmy into a chick, same as how I don't have a problem with Perry being black, just stay true to the characters you're tweaking.
They probably did it to remove Jimmy's sexual ambiguity.

There doesn't really need to be kryptonite. It would make sense with Lex Luthor as the villain but it's not necessary with Zod.

I'm not saying that, just FYI, the 'wtf' was more an expression of surprise than any kind of outrage. The design of the Kryptonian ships irks me and now this irks me too.

I worry that in diluting much of the source material in order to make the story more grounded/immersive, they might lose the identity of the material in the process.

I wonder, with the case of kryptonite, if it’s diluting the source material because I have to wonder if they’re saying it doesn’t exist in this universe. So far, it just seems like it’s not in the film. If the second or third film had Lex Luthor as the villain, I could see it there. In fact, an interesting story would be to have Superman master his doubts and struggles in this movie, and then feel on top of the world in the second movie only to find out that he can be taken down by this tiny rock. You could create an interesting story with that sort of thing.

The thing I'm more "wtf?" over is that Kal-El was special even on Krypton. Unless the idea is that he was somehow a weak Kryptonian and he was special because he was a runt or something, only to go to Earth and have these superhuman powers, then I feel like this is taking the Space Jesus element of Superman to a whole new level. Even Smallville didn't go there and they rammed Space Jesus down our throats.

A hero without his weaknesses isn't terribly interesting to me :/

To me, it's like getting rid of Bruce Wayne's fears in Batman Begins.

Kryptonite is Superman’s physical weakness. It’s pretty clear he’s going to have a lot of emotional and psychological weaknesses in this film. Zod being the villain makes the all the more likely given that Superman will find himself caught between two worlds and two identities.

When your character is basically unstoppable, it's very difficult to become invested in them. Especially if he was already 'special' to begin with before arriving on Earth.

We see Batman get the shit beat out of him in every film, both psychologically and physically, if an impenetrable man is just going to be moping around for an entire movie without anything knocking him back then I'll find it hard to give a shit. I know there's a way you can succeed with that direction, but we have no idea if they will. For me, Superman and Kryptonite are synonymous, even if I always thought it was a shitty weakness in the first place, it's still a weakness and heroes need them.

Snyder made this mistake in Sucker Punch, when he for some insane reason decided that all of the action sequences would be dreams...and that's it. Characters get thrown through hundreds of concrete walls and fight giant monsters without breaking a sweat, and as a result all tension is immediately drained from the movie. If you're making a Superman movie, removing his one notable physical weakness is an incredibly risky move.

It’s risky if his enemies don’t have something to beat him with, but Zod and Faora do. They have the same superhuman powers that he does, so they can take him on in a way that humans can’t. They have Kryptontian technology with them that can take Superman on. That’s why I think that if there’s a second movie with Lex Luthor or some other human as the enemy, they’ll introduce kryptonite along with that. It’s just that for Man of Steel, it’s not required since the villain doesn’t need kryptonite.

Is the villain confirmed yet? I'm just asking because I haven't been paying much attention. Brainiac might be a cool villain, but I dunno if he's the one I'd make Supes' "first" rival. Starting with Zod or Lex makes more sense, yeah.

But isn't that just the same thing? Now it's just two or three unstopabble guys fighting each other instead of something fighting one unstoppable guy?

It's like when vfight each other in movies, except this would be without sunlight, stakes, crucifixes or holy water.

Zod has been the confirmed villain for a long time. He's played by Michael Shannon. Faora is also a villain.

They're not unstoppable to each other. That's my point. They're on an even playing field.
