Personally, I completely despise the idea of metal detectors in school. Although not as stupid as saying teachers should be armed, it follows the same problem—it means even a school, what should be a sanctuary, is suddenly a war zone.

Yes. Because politicians never over-sell when it comes to speeches/conferences, and in particular not this President or his administration, hm?

More constructive action that deserves more attention: Dianne Feinstein (who is a shitty Senator, and who in an ideal world would have the shit primaried out of her) actually introduced a pretty decent assault weapons ban bill. It has some loopholes (been reading through it), but it's relatively comparable to the original (which I found weak, but which nevertheless had a salutary effect.)

I don’t mean to sound cynical, but “something” is a strong word. They can come up with ideas and proposals, but, ultimately, they can’t enact it into law without a Congressional vote -- with Republicans. There’s also very little the President can do on his own—or would want to do, lest he face massive political backlash for “taking away people’s guns.”

This also needs to be done FAST if anything meaningful is going to come out of it. The lifespan of this push for new legislation is going to be longer than normal, but it is by no means infinite. If this gets in February, good luck getting anything passed.

Pretty much. Honestly, given the political capital needing to be expended, I'd much rather we focus on:

1. Stimulus
2. Immigration Reform
3. Climate Change

On those Republicans actually have more of a vulnerability and the President pretty much won election on the first two. If politics is the art of the possible, any of those three would help more people than any plausible gun control push could now.

Other than that, as I've noted, I don't have much faith in the President. Leagues better than any Republican, but a historically weak President.
