Gay marriage is now legal in all 50 states!

Linky-loo to NPR

Super stoked! My friends in Louisiana can get equal treatment, I don't have to worry about Oklahoma trying to reverse its ruling, and I'm going to buy some rainbow cupcakes. To celebrate. This comes right before my friend's wedding and right as a family member announced that they had a same-sex partner. So, all happy thoughts here in Tweed-land.

spoon-fed topic starters:

1.) congrats!/ post gifs
2.) talk about if states will try to pass bs laws to prevent SCOTUS from affecting them
3.) How long will it be before this takes affect?

The US really isn't a progressive country.

But yes, happy day! Good decision by the Supreme Court. I'm actually surprised John Roberts didn't join this one.

There is still a good chance that this will be overruled in a state to state basis.

Still, this is a step in the right direction.

I vote we have a special thread where we all get together and hold a rave. It'd be cool if my Jade and Marf's Andro got together to do the robot.

No there's not. There's some legal trickery they can probably do, like how they limit access to abortions while still keeping it legal, but once the Supreme Court rules something like this is legal, the states can't overrule that and make it illegal.

Which is why this is such a big deal.

GJ US, you finally made me not ashamed of you for once. It's a good day.

The first step towards not being a backwards-ass country. At least for today, I won't feel ashamed by being an American.

If that's the case then I stand corrected.

about dang time.

Some governors and stuff and claiming that its an attack on freedom of religion, which is silly. all your doing is saying that people can now legally be married. you dont have to go to the ceremony or anything. seriously.

Which is ridiculous. The ruling specifically mentions the First Amendment right of religious freedom. This does not mean Churches now must conduct non-traditional marriages.

I don't really care for government even regulating marriage, but at least now it's a more equality-bases system.

Fox News had a lady who was like holding back tears because she was horrified of the idea of other people not following her religion to a T and getting married. Freedom of Religion, right?

In GOP land, "religious freedom" means "everything in America is Christian."

Sherman would be proud.

>Confederate battle flag boycotted by major retailers.
>ACA challenge repealed.
>Gay marriage legalized.

Must suck to be a Southern conservative at the moment.

So we made a thoroughfare for freedom and her train,
Sixty miles in latitude, three hundred to the main;
Treason fled before us, for resistance was in vain
While we were marching through Georgia!

Yea, this made me smile like a goat on LSD this morning when I saw the news. I can only imagine how many people are losing their shit over this.

So I went and started trolling Conservative News Groups on Facebook.

Fun times.

Personally, I'm just happy my brother, a best friend, and several other people, one of which I owe my life and left ear to, can just marry and be done with it. Although there are still a great deal many things to worry about.

I would be remiss if I didn't also mention...

- Federal ENDA protections are still needed
- Housing discrimination is still legal in many states
- Adoptions are not legal everywhere
- Gay conversation therapy is still legal in many states
- Giving blood still has restrictions because of AIDS fears
- Transgender issues, discrimination, etc are still rampant

Marriage equality is hugely important, and it's been the most public LGBT issue, but there's still a lot more fights to be had in the push for equality. This doesn't end today. It just takes shape in a different way.

Thanks for reminding me to tune in with a bag of popcorn.
