Well, the way they are shielded allows them to essentially circumvent both forms of shielding, plus they are all but impossible to intercept or shoot out of the sky, and they can turn 90 degrees in less than 2 meters. When I read the article on Wookiepedia, I thought it'd be a good idea. Oh, and the proton reaction that creates their explosion is devastating.
Right, erm. I've been working on this technology off and on for sometime since last year. I call it 'Diatom Matrix Tech'. Basically Diatom Matrices are composed of living cells with silica (silicon dioxide, or Quartz for those that didn't know.) They would make for excellent Co2-Oxygen converters for ships, and they grow meaning should a section become damaged. It would self-repair.
This stuff is also useful for making it a good choice for unshielded equipment as it is also erosion resistant. Silica itself is used in everything from heat shields, to capacitors and even insulators. But wait folks! There's more.
They can also be applied to humanoid biology, removing salts, purifying and aiding in the oxygenation of the blood. And can also double as a means of the creation of Implants. Why you may ask and how it is it possible? Well this is taken from my writeup of it: "The reasoning is that a living, soft, adaptive system is much much less dangerous and maintenance-demanding than either purely mechanical or biological system. Furthermore these systems are self-upgrading and repairing, only requiring that the host adjust his or her diet in order to modify Diatom Matrix growth rates.
Finally, they also have significant cosmetic value: silica can grow in many aesthetically-pleasing forms such as agates, tiger's eyes, amethysts, rose quartz, and aventurine. If cultivated correctly, these can even be grown into low-detail patterns or symbols."
