I enjoyed this film because it understands that it is an adventure first and foremost. We don't need all the answers to what happened in the interim period, those will come with time and new movies. They don't need to explain where everybody is, or what there doing... did the first Movie do that? of course not, the gaps will be filled over time. Those that aren't will be explained by a new and growing EU.
The characters were golden, all of them feel wonderfully inspired of old tropes and new paradigm's. Even the villains of this movie feel more realistic, more believable. They have emotions, they get angry, they get confused, they get scared. Also there is humor in this that feels natural, unforced, effortless. The plot is not old and stale as some have alleged, it is a time honored tale.... But done in a way that is new and revitalized.
This trilogy is going to be a fun ride... I can't wait to see what they have in store.
For those who didn't like it... were you looking for perfection? 'Cause that ain't Star Wars... all Star Wars movies are flawed, the point is to see past the flaws for the gems underneath, the subtext, the history, the fun... all of that is here.
Sorry but Abram's did everything he needed to do and then some. If you didn't enjoy this... I have a hard time believing any Star Wars movie produced in this current climate and time would please you.
