So. Watched that episode. My wife hated it. I hugged my daughter just a little bit tighter at the end.

It was... pretty fanfic-y all the bullshit about Stannis aside.

SPOILERS FOLLOW

- Arya sees Ser Meryn. Because he is a BAD GUY who must be killed by Arya who is a GOOD GUY he is revealed to be a pedophile. She is set up to kill him
- No Brienne or Sansa... whatever
- Jon Snow returns. Ser Alliser says something about him knowing nothing, except this time it's a variation. Olly stares at him... angrily.
- Dorne! **** you if you want to know what happened
- The last twenty minutes aren't bad, exactly, but they also don't make much sense. How did eleventy-billion Sons of the Harpy get in the arena. How did one sneak up right behind Daario (this guy who is supposed to be a badass) and almost kill Daenerys? Oh yeah, we totally needed that fakeout with Jorah (and the choreograph was merely alright.)

Overall this show still has me because I can root for Tyrion/Brienne/Jon Snow/and maybe Jaime.

But otherwise?

I would say that we don't know if Dany's Targ immunity makes her a bad carrier or whatever but one of these assholes wrote the screenplay for Troy so overthinking it is like a massive overstatement.

God-dammit D&D, stop ruining stannis's character with your BS. Taking away his dry sarcastic commentary was one thing. Taking away one of the pivitol parts of his character and motivation? And in the span of less then half an episode? That's just bad writing.

was actually a plotpoint created by George RR Martin. D&D were shocked and horrified when he told them. This is just a case of the reaching the point before GRRM does in the books.

We'll probably be reading this scene next year in Winds of Winter.

It'll probably be better written, or with an entirely different context and circumstance, such as melisandre doing the sacrifice without stannis's go ahead in order to save his life. I doubt stannis will send word in the middle of his starving seige of winterfell,

"Dear Melisandre, please burn my daughter alive so me and my army can live. And also tell Massey to ignore my previous and highly specific order to hire a bunch of sellsowrds to obey my daughter, and full-fill my last will and testament to put her on the iron throne. That was my bad, I meant to say make sure she gets a nice bath of oil to burn up nice and crispy just the way the red god likes it."

It was a rushed scene, but rushed in the absolute worst way, and with the effect of absolutely destroying anything salvagable from Stannis's character. This is the Anakin Killing Kids scene from Episode 3, only worse, cause its Anakin killing his own kid, with just as much buildup to it as Episode 3 had for it.

Oh I'm not defending the scene or the motivation and set up D&D used. It was pretty obviously just another shock value decision rather than having it be a crystallized character moment.

At the same time I'm not even sure GRRM would be able to pull this one off unless it's in the context you suggested of the Red Witch acting without his orders. It goes against the grain of everything Stannis has said and done in regards to Shireen.

I also found it highly suspect that after multiple episodes of being an awful hateful and spiteful Mother with a religious fervor for burning her family and sending them into the LoLs embrace Selyse suddenly cared.

I want Melisandre to get attacked by a dragon and when she's engulfed in the flames, I want her to use that power to spirit bomb a hundred White Walkers and then right as she does this, a stray arrow goes right through her neck and she dies.

Also, are we thinking it's inevitable that Bran is going to warg into dragon, be killed and then be stuck inside of that dragon?

Because I'd like that, if Bran survived as a protector of the realm of sorts as a more intelligent dragon.
