Not gonna lie. I let out a little bit of a fanboy squeal when I read that.

What about SWTOR? Is this a replacement?

It'll be a console free world. Not sure if that means MMO, but having the entire Star Wars universe (well some planets at least) being free world, plus the new gen graphics itll be better than SWTOT, hopefully.

It'd be fun if they made it Mass Effect style. That'd be so perfect...
Meh, I'd honestly prefer it to be more of a combination of perhaps Fallout 3 meets GTA V but with free flying space mechanics with fully explorable ship environments. Also, for the love of science, please avoid multiplayer at all costs, unless you use a system similar to Dark Souls but with Force Ghosts instead.

I'm hoping the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 will be something along those lines.

TOR sux.

What, specifically, is open world? Since I'm not a gamer. Is it like, if the game was set on Coruscant, you can just roam freely around the planet?

It means there may be a pause button for when you need to pee, Bac.

I... trust it'll be pretty, but I'm not 100% on having EA responsible for a supposed open world game. Moreso given the studios they labelled in particular as being in charge - DICE, Visceral, and Bioware. DICE's likely project is pretty darn obvious, and Bioware's similarly so, if offset somewhat by their whole promise of SWTOR being 'Kotors 3, 4, 5, 6, etc'. Wouldn't be the first time they've had to backpedal after announcing something a bit beyond their scope (remembering the 'thousands of endings' for Mass Effect 3?), but at the same time, they are still one of the best developers out there for narrative, and clearly have experience with the Star Wars universe, so fair enough.

The big If then, is Visceral.

Historically, I would say they've been better for game mechanics than necessarily for story, and given Star Wars is somewhat about the experience of the Galaxy Far Far Away, that can lend itself pretty well. I certainly know I would love a Star Wars RPG with something akin to Lord of the Rings the Third Age's battle system, and there's more than a few plot ideas from Star Wars that lends itself to the style of the Dead Space games. At the same time, I do worry a bit on how the script might turn out, because that is also often a factor in immersing players.

And then accounting for all three of them, if they're starting development now, hopefully they wouldn't end up strong armed into creating properties to better serve as tie ins for whatever Mr Abrams has cooking.

EDIT:

And an open world game is where, comparatively speaking, you have a game that you are free to explore with and interact in, rather than follow contained stories and missions separated by loading screens. Basically, think Fallout 3, the Elder Scrolls series, GTA, The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, so forth - the basic draw is that you can go out and see the full world, instead of sectioned off parts of it (though inside locations are another matter entirely).

For those who don't know, Bac got TOR back when it was new, and we were playing together on it (teehee) when he asked me where the pause button was because he needed to pee.

I'm not a gamer. It was my first MMO.

Yes, essentially like Skyrim or GTA.

In short, if it is bad, we will be knocking on EA's door... to slap them.
