If it's like a tiny cameo that won't be mentioned again, It'll be fine. A recurring character on the other hand...

Either one is a bad idea, IMO. Unless he's in heavy makeup, or he's not in the focus of a scene, even a brief cameo is going to take people out of the film.

Saw the midnight release last night with my brother. I don't think I'm going to spoil anything here...

I liked it, overall, but it wasn't without its faults. I felt like the whole beginning just sort of dragged, and there were some scenes that took too long that really don't have much bearing on the story of Bilbo's journey. It's interesting for people who know some of the mythology, but I don't think it needed to be in the movie (when you see it, you'll know what I'm talking about). Also, for some reason Gandalf spent a lot of time looking rather... awkward? Uncomfortable? I don't know what it was, but he was by no means the same Gandalf he was before. And to be honest, I think they went a little overboard with the CGI. More than once I felt like I was watching a Michael Bay film with dwarfs in it. All things considered though, I really enjoyed it. I look forward to the future installments :)

I thought it was great, but I'm on the same boat as Loco; the use of CGI is too damn high! That being said, the Shire was beautiful.

Is there any damn reason why they are making three movies off of just one book? Other then it being a cash in?

from what I gathered its not that they went anymore over board with CG than they did with the lotr series..but they shot it at a higher frame rate than was normal, which now makes all of them stand out 1000 times more

hobbit was shot in 48fps....film is 24 normally, animation 28 to 30

Because nobody wants to sit through a 9+ hour movie.

I did notice the hugely increased frame rate, but I don't feel like that was it. It was more of the size and ridiculousness in my opinion. They did it in a way the LoTR trilogy really didn't- I can't quiet figure out how to accurately express what exactly it was.

There's a lot of stuff in The Hobbit, man. And apparently the third film is going to be a bridge between The Hobbit and LOTR -- I'm guessing, Aragorn and Gandalf searching for GOllum.

Some of the animations involving Smaug were a bit awkward.

So you are saying The Hobbit book is bigger then all three LotR books combined?

Why else would one book equal to a 9 hour movie?

well another thing too at the higher frame rate is it makes cg stand out more yes, make any choppy animations stand out, and more over it makes actual physical props LOOK more like props

so I can only assume he did so in an attempt to stylize it slightly? *shrugs I was noticing in alot of the costume and makeup directions they went they went alittle ore over the top a few times too so

The thing with The Hobbit is that its topic is grander than the way it was written. There are key scenes and action beats that last only a few pages long, when they could have been more fully formed and fleshed out. That's what Peter Jackson is doing with The Hobbit trilogy, fleshing those moments out into a larger story. He's also taken stories by J.R.R. Tolkein set in the time period of The Hobbit but were not part of the novel, and he's adding those stories into The Desolation of Smaug and There And Back Again.

Hence, material for three films.

The only reason I want to see this movie is to see the first 9 minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness.
